Cover Reveal: IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME by Kylie Scott

Today I'm thrilled to help InkSlingerPR reveal the cover of one of my favorite authors, Kylie Scott's upcoming release IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME...

Title: It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time
Author: Kylie Scott
Release Date: August 7, 2018

Blurb:
"Addictive like all Kylie Scott books, you'll swoon, laugh, ache, put your life on hold, and compulsively read until the wee hours of the night—only to reread the whole thing the next morning. Perfection!" - Katy Evans, New York Times bestselling author

Returning home for her father’s wedding was never going to be easy for Adele. If being sent away at eighteen hadn’t been bad enough, the mess she left behind when she made a pass at her dad’s business partner sure was.

Fifteen years older than her, Pete had been her crush for as long as she could remember. But she’d misread the situation—confusing friendliness for undying love. Awkward. Add her father to the misunderstanding, and Pete was left with a broken nose and a business on the edge of ruin. The man had to be just as glad as everyone else when she left town.

Seven years later, things are different. Adele is no longer a kid, but a fully grown adult more than capable of getting through the wedding and being polite. But all it takes is seeing him again to bring back those old feelings.

Sometimes first loves are the truest.

Book Review: REBEL HEIR by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

Rebel Heir (Rush Series Duet #1) by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward
Blurb:
From New York Times Bestselling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward, comes the first book in a new, sexy duet.

How to kick off a great summer in the Hamptons:

Snag a gorgeous rental on the beach. Check.

Get a job at a trendy summer haunt. Check.

How to screw up a great summer in the Hamptons:

Fall for the one guy with a dark leather jacket, scruff on his face, and intense eyes that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the tony looking crowd. A guy you can’t have when you’ll be leaving at the end of the season.

Check. Check. Check.

I should add—especially when the guy is your sexy, tattooed God of a boss.

Especially when he not only owns your place of employment but inherited half of the town.

Especially when he’s mean to you.

Or so I thought.

Until one night when he demanded I get in his car so he could drive me home because he didn’t want me walking in the dark.

That was sort of how it all started with Rush.

And then little by little, some of the walls of this hardass man started to come down.

I never expected that the two of us, seemingly opposites from the outside, would grow so close.

I wasn't supposed to fall for the rebel heir, especially when he made it clear he didn’t want to cross the line with me.

As the temperature turned cooler, the nights became hotter. My summer became a lot more interesting—and complicated.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

My Review:
Gia is in the Hamptons for the summer working on her novel. Or at least that's what she's supposed to be doing and why she blew all of her money on a summer share. But the writing just isn't coming. Then her friend Riley asks her to fill in for her as bartender at The Heights, a popular bar.

Unfortunately, Gia doesn't know a Mudslide from a Moscow Mule and when she admits as much to the tattooed hottie sitting at the end of the bar she's horrified to find that he owns The Heights.

Rush is both annoyed and drawn to the girl screwing up drinks behind his bar. He should fire her friend for putting someone with no bartending experience behind the bar but when his hostess quits unexpectedly he comes to a different solution. Gia's friend can keep her job if Gia takes over as hostess. That should be enough to keep Rush's wandering thoughts and hands off of Gia.

But the more time Rush spends with Gia, the harder it is for him to stop thinking about her, wanting her. Their connection is undeniable. But can Rush put aside his fears and create lasting happiness with Gia? Or will an unexpected blip in the road stop them before they have a chance to begin?

Rebel Heir is sexy, funny, and sweet - a perfect beach read! This is the second book I've read by Penelope Ward and the first by Vi Keeland and I loved it.

Rush has the dirtiest mind and mouth and overall he's an amazing character. I loved his relationship with his mom and how protective he is with Gia. Gia was easily relatable, especially with her being a writer. Believe me, I know those days of staring at the computer screen after only writing a few words really well

The ending has me crazy wanting to know what's going to happen next so I immediately ordered Rebel Heart. Overall, if you're looking for a steamy romance that will make you laugh to throw in your beach bag this summer, Rebel Heir is a great read!

Top Ten Tuesday: Book Worlds I'd Want To Live In... Or Maybe Not

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.

Top Ten Tuesday: Five Bookish Worlds I'd Like to Live in and Five I Wouldn't

This week's TTT is about bookish worlds you'd like to step into and live in. Or, on the flip side, it is about terribly awful book worlds that you'd never want to live in.

I'm packing my bags for...

1. Velaris (A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas)
Velaris is described as such a beautiful, vibrant city - a hidden city for artists and dreamers. It would be amazing to live there. Especially if Rhysand was there ;)

2. Sleepy Hollow (The Hollow Trilogy by Jessica Verday)
Ah - the legend, the cemetery, the feeling of fall. I'd love to live in the world of The Hollow Trilogy mixing perfumes with Abbey or watching Caspian draw, visiting the hidden cottage in the cemetery that nobody else knows is there...

3. Ravka (Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo)
To be able to go to the Little Palace and train among the Grisha (and maybe meet The Darkling)... who wouldn't want to dive into this world?

4. The Tower (The Thousandth Floor Trilogy by Katharine McGee)
The parties, the technology, the building that has everything you'd ever need so you wouldn't actually have to ever leave if you didn't want to? Sign me up! I'll be sure to watch my step ;)

5. The Paris Opera House (RoseBlood by A.G. Howard)
As far as books about boarding schools go, none would be more fantastic that living and going to school in a historic opera house. It would be fantastic to see how they overhauled it for classrooms.

I Think I'll Skip This Trip To...

1. Rosewood (Pretty Little Liars Series by Sara Shepard)
There's a little too much murder, secrets, blackmail, and betrayal going on in Rosewood for my taste. I'm not sure I'd make it out without having a nervous breakdown.

2. The Post-Apocalyptic World of the Unknown Trilogy by Wendy Higgins
I love this series but I could never survive aliens coming to Earth, let alone being shipped off to camps and being told sex is completely forbidden except once a year with a person of the alien's choosing. And though I want to think of myself as brave, I'm not sure I'd make it as a soldier in the reclaiming of Earth either.

3. Sparrow (The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw)
I love, love, love this book but to live in a town where every summer three dead sisters return to steal the bodies of local girls in order to drown boys in the harbor - wow. And the people can't do anything to stop it and essentially have turned it into a tourist thing... wow. But I would love to try one of Mrs. Alba's Forgetful Cakes on the other hand...

4.Quivira, Kansas (Blood and Salt Duology by Kim Liggett)
Kansas would be bad enough, but to be trapped in a cult that your mother grew up in and expected to pick a mate and sacrifice yourselves to Katya? No thank you.

5. Gilead (The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood)
No. I don't even have to explain why this is the last bookish world I'd want to find myself in. Hell. No.

What bookish worlds would you love to live in? Which ones would you avoid? Did any of yours make my list? Let me know in the comments or drop me a link to your answers!
Happy Reading Bookdragons!

Excerpt:
This is how my heart breaks

What. The. Fuck.
I had sat down at my desk and opened a manila envelope that was left on top of my stack of mail. It had seemed harmless enough.
But it wasn’t.
I blink my eyes over and over trying to make my brain process what it’s seeing—but I can’t. I can’t unsee the images in the stack of pictures in my hand. Giant glossy eight by tens from different angles so there is absolutely no doubt that my heart is breaking.
And it is broken. It’s not just broken, it’s shattered.
“It’s not what it looks like,” I hear from behind me as he looks over my shoulder and I have to grit my teeth to keep from screaming.
I shuffle the pictures sliding the top one to the back of the stack so that I can see the next one. This one is zoomed in. His head is tipped back and his face is distorted with both lust and passion as she straddles his lap. Her hands hold his to her breasts and I can see the play of tendons flexing through them as he grips them tight. It was only two nights ago that his hands were on my own breasts in much the same way as I rode his cock on the sofa.
“Claire, did you hear me?” he asks but I shuffle the stack again.
In this picture, he has his arms wrapped around her back and he’s pulling her close, her breasts mashed up against his strong chest. Her hands with long, red painted talons press in on either side of his face and as they kiss hungrily, their mouths open as their tongues tangle.
“Goddamnit, Claire! Did you hear me?” My spine turns to steel.
“I did. I’m just choosing to ignore you,” I respond coolly.
“Don’t do this, baby,” he pleads.
“I’m not the one who did anything,” I snap.
“I can explain.” But I’m not interested in listening to him plead a case when he is more than guilty.
“I’m going to need you to leave, Wes.”
“No.”
“This changes everything,” I say so softly even I struggle to hear the words that are coming out of my mouth.
“This changes nothing! Fuck that, Claire,” he yells. “You want to run away. You have always wanted to run away. And here is your fucking reason to served up on a goddamn silver platter.” Everyone around us in the bullpen is doing everything they can to make it appear that they are not listening, not studying the tragic demise of Claire and Wes with rapt attention. But we all know that they are.
“No,” I shout back as I throw the stack of glossy betrayal down on top of my desk. I push my rolly chair back and stand. It slams into the desk behind mine. “You do not get to come in here, where I work, and tell me that I am to blame for your bullshit.”
“Okay,” he says quickly as he holds his hands up in surrender. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I can see you need time.”
“I need a lot of things. One of them is definitely distance.”
“I don’t know if I can give you that. I can’t lose you, baby.” His words burn hot behind my eyes and the last thing I want is for the guys in the bullpen to see me cry.
“You should have thought about that before you fooled around with that stripper.”
“Claire—” he starts but I don’t let him finish.
“You need to go now,” I say softly.
I stand with my feet apart, my hands on my hips, and my head bowed as if I’m waiting for a blow. But I see him clearly even if only in my peripheral. He looks at me and opens his mouth as if he’s going to try to explain again. Something in my stance must have told him it was a losing battle because he snaps his mouth closed before moving towards the exit.
Wes pauses just before opening the door to turn and look back at me, I see him in my peripheral, but I’m looking at his lies and deceit spread across my desk for all to see. He pulls open the door and slams it on his way out. I’m Detective Claire Goodnite and this is how my heart breaks.

(Audio)Book Review: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

The Handmaid's Tale: Special Edition by Margaret Atwood
Narrated by Claire Danes
Blurb:
"Are there any questions?" The final line in Margaret Atwood's modern classic, The Handmaid's Tale, has teased and perplexed fans since the book's original release more than 30 years ago. Now, in this Audible Original production, listeners get some of the answers they've waited so long to hear.

Featuring an all-new interview with Professor Piexoto, written by Atwood and performed by a full cast, The Handmaid's Tale: Special Edition is a must-listen for both fans and newcomers alike. Emmy Award winner Claire Danes (Homeland, Temple Grandin) gives a stirring performance of this classic in speculative fiction, where the message (and the warning) is now more timely than ever. In addition to rich sound design that honors the audio origins of Atwood's classic, the special edition also includes a brand-new afterword from the author and an introduction written by author Valerie Martin (Mary Reilly, Property).

After a violent coup in the United States overthrows the Constitution and ushers in a new government regime, the Republic of Gilead imposes subservient roles on all women. Offred, now a Handmaid tasked with the singular role of procreation in the childless household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife, can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost everything, even her own name. Despite the danger, Offred learns to navigate the intimate secrets of those who control her every move, risking her life for mere glimpses of her former freedom, and records her story for future listeners.

Whether you're a fan of the original novel or someone who has recently discovered it, The Handmaid's Tale: Special Edition will shock, impress, and satisfy all those who listen.

My Review:
The Handmaid’s Tale is a powerful novel that, in my opinion, should be required reading for everyone. I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of dystopian novels because I find them depressing. I tend to think we as a society stand on the verge of a dystopian society and the more unacceptable things we allow to carry on, the closer we get to living in a world like The Handmaid’s Tale, The Selection, or The Hunger Games.

Even though I don’t generally like this genre of book and probably would not have enjoyed it when I was younger (and probably would not have read it now if I had not watched and become addicted to the Hulu show.. which admittedly I only started watching because I’d previously liked some of the actors/actresses in previous roles) I found the writing shined - horrifically describing a society and a new reality for Offred that the reader finds unfathomable as the narrator reminisces about the way her life was before Gilead. This book broke my heart while simultaneously scaring me far more than any horror novel could because the phrase in my mind while listening wasn’t “this couldn’t happen here” but instead, “oh my, what if this happened?”

As I listened to the audiobook version of The Handmaid’s Tale instead of reading the book, I did enjoy Claire Danes’s narration as well as the other narration at the end of the audiobook. It was interesting to hear bits and pieces of what environments inspired the author to write this book and I found the essay to be spot on. It does feel as if the panel in the future was making light of Offred’s plight. On a side note, I hope that the end of Offred’s story is less vague when we get to that point on the Hulu show.

I like this book so far, I just needed a break to read a few other books.

Bring Me Their Hearts by Sara Wolf
Blurb:
Zera is a Heartless – the immortal, unageing soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a Prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum; if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy her heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him – every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him – until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The Prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

Literally.
