It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 30 September 2019

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

Hey Bookdragons! Here's to squeezing in those last few books of September and making those October TBR lists!

What I Read Last Week:
I couldn't wait any longer to read the follow up to Tyffany's debut novel Imber and I loved Tellus just as much if not more! I couldn't put this one down and in my totally not biased opinion, Tyffany Hackett is definitely an author to check out!

What I Am Reading Now:
I have about 2 hours left in this audiobook and I think I know who the killer is but you never know... Michele Campbell has a talent for taking what you think you know and throwing a huge curveball in at the very end. As far as Thrillers go, Campbell is one of my favorite authors. I just downloaded the audiobook of her most recent release, Stranger on the Beach to listen to next month.
Up Next:
With tomorrow being October 1st I'm kicking off my Spooktober Reading Marathon... Here are a few books on my TBR...

No One’s Home by DM Pulley
The Last by Hanna Jameson
Follow You Home by Mark Edwards
The Broken Girls by Simone St. James

The Haunting of Beacon Hill by Ambrose Ibsen
The Girl from the Otherside by Nagabe
Nevermore by Kelly Creagh*
The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon*

The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich *
The Naida Tapes by Dawn Kurtagich
Slasher Girls and Monster Boys Anthology*
Crimson Peak by Nancy Holder*

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics*
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare*
Lucky Break by Carly Phillips*
The Hollow by Jessica Verday*

* = Rereads
Do you have any spooky reads planned for October?

Book Review: How to Love A Duke In Ten Days

How to Love a Duke in Ten Days
Devil You Know, Book 1
Kerrigan Byrne
August 27, 2019
St. Martin's Paperbacks
eBook, Paperback, audiobook 440 pages

BLURB
These men are dark, bold, and brave. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees...

Famed and brilliant, Lady Alexandra Lane has always known how to look out for to herself. But nobody would ever expect that she has darkness in her past—one that she pays a blackmailer to keep buried. Now, with her family nearing bankruptcy, Alexandra strikes upon a solution: Get married to one of the empire’s most wealthy eligible bachelors. Even if he does have the reputation of a devil.

LOVE TAKES NO PRISONERS

Piers Gedrick Atherton, the Duke of Redmayne, is seeking revenge and the first step is securing a bride. Winning a lady’s hand is not so easy, however, for a man known as the Terror of Torcliff. Then, Alexandra enters his life like a bolt of lightning. When she proposes marriage, Piers knows that, like him, trouble haunts her footsteps. But her gentleness, sharp wit, independent nature, and incredible beauty awakens every fierce desire within him. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe in his arms.

My Review:
Let me start out by saying I don't usually read books like this because I usually find the genre to be... well a little cheesy. But when the publisher emailed me to offer me an eARC, I thought "oh, why not?" I was in a reading slump and I figured it would be a quick read.

I can't really say if I enjoyed this one or not. It was, as I expected, cheesy and sort of a brainless read (meaning you get through it without it having much of a plot besides the romance).

It was just an okay read for me. I'm not sure I'd continue reading the series and I probably should have just said no from the get-go. My apologies. It's just not my cup of tea.

Book Review: THE ORCHID THRONE by Jeffe Kennedy

The Orchid Throne
Forgotten Empires Book 1
Jeffe Kennedy
September 24, 2019
St. Martin's Paperbacks
eBook, Paperback, 384 pages

BLURB
"The Orchid Throne is a captivating and sensual fantasy romance you won’t want to miss! High stakes. Remarkable worldbuilding. Unique and compelling characters. A slow-burn romance that’ll make you combust.” — Amanda Bouchet, USA Today bestselling author of The Kingmaker Chronicles

"The Orchid Throne captures from the first page and doesn't let go as Jeffe Kennedy weaves a timeless tale of love and survival amidst a lush backdrop teeming greed and deceit. You will fall for Lia and Con and root for them with every breath you take. This is a book that will linger in your thoughts for a very long time."- Darynda Jones, New York Times bestselling author

Welcome to the world of Forgotten Empires from award winning author Jeffe Kennedy that begins with The Orchid Throne.

A PRISONER OF FATE

As Queen of the island kingdom of Calanthe, Euthalia will do anything to keep her people free—and her secrets safe—from the mad tyrant who rules the mainland. Guided by a magic ring of her father’s, Lia plays the political game with the cronies the emperor sends to her island. In her heart, she knows that it’s up to her to save herself from her fate as the emperor’s bride. But in her dreams, she sees a man, one with the power to build a better world—a man whose spirit is as strong, and whose passion is as fierce as her own…

A PRINCE AMONG MEN

Conrí, former Crown Prince of Oriel, has built an army to overthrow the emperor. But he needs the fabled Abiding Ring to succeed. The ring that Euthalia holds so dear to her heart. When the two banished rulers meet face to face, neither can deny the flames of rebellion that flicker in their eyes—nor the fires of desire that draw them together. But in this broken world of shattered kingdoms, can they ever really trust each other? Can their fiery alliance defeat the shadows of evil that threaten to engulf their hearts and souls?

My Review:
This is my first time reading this author but it definitely won't be the last. I loved the world building, it was so rich with depth.

The reader will experience a myriad of feels while reading The Orchid Throne - rage at the tyrant, sad for his victims, and conflicted over a queen whose feelings are often masked behind a cold facade - which to me shows excellent plot development and writing to cause me to have such different emotions during the course of the story. The characters are well developed and you feel their feelings, their triumphs and hardships, their passion... oh boy the passion.

Overall I loved this book and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

“It's all rainbows and pixie dust up in this bitch.”- Unearthed, Cecy Robson

I thoroughly enjoyed Unearthed! Olivia is a fabulous main character and I loved her attitude. What drew me to like her right off the bat was the way she talked to her boss Marco. Who hasn't had a boss you have to, shall we say "shepherd", a little?

Her chemistry with Ryker aka Death is off the charts despite the daggers she's glaring at him in the beginning. I loved watching things develop into more.

This book is fast-paced and will keep you interested which is such a good thing right now since I've been in a serious book slump. If you liked books like Abbi Glines's Existence Trilogy or Kim Harrison's Madison Avery Trilogy I think you'll love Unearthed!

My Rating:
🌟🌟🌟.75
3.75 of 5 Stars!

I Can't Wait For... REPUTATION

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.

I loved the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard and I'm eager to read her adult debut!

Reputation
By Sara Shepard
Mystery, Thriller
eBook, Paperback, 384 Pages
December 3, 2019 by Dutton

Blurb
In this fast-paced new novel from Sara Shepard, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Pretty Little Liars, a tight-knit college town scrambles for answers when an e-mail hack reveals life-changing secrets and scandals.

Aldrich University is rocked to its core when a hacker dumps 40,000 people's e-mails—the entire faculty, staff, students, alums—onto an easily searchable database. Rumors and affairs immediately leak, but things turn explosive when Kit Manning's handsome husband, Dr. Greg Strasser, is found murdered. Kit's sister, Willa, returns for the funeral, setting foot in a hometown she fled fifteen years ago, after a night she wishes she could forget. As an investigative reporter, Willa knows something isn't right about the night Greg was killed, and she's determined to find the truth. What she doesn't expect is that everyone has something to hide. And with a killer on the loose, Willa and Kit must figure out who killed Greg before someone else is murdered.

Told from multiple points of view, Reputation is full of twists, turns, and shocking reveals. It's a story of intrigue, sabotage, and the secrets we keep—and how far we go to keep them hidden. Number one bestseller Sara Shepard is at the top of her game in this brand-new adult novel.
