#BookTag Saturday: The "I Dare You" Tag

It's moving day! Since I'm up to my elbows in boxes I'll make this brief. This week I'm doing the "I Dare You" Book Tag...

1. Dare you to jump backwards: Name a book you went into blindly and it let you down.
Beautiful cover, great prologue.. completely downhill from there.

2. One drink too many: Name a book that gave you a hangover.

3. Spin the bottle: Name a book with a terrible romance or romance scene.
Zach and Adria's romance could have ended up so messy if the author hadn't made it possible at the end.

 4. Mooning: Name a book that was too descriptive.
Though I liked the descriptions of the world of Caraval, at times they bordered on purple prose.

5. Scream and Run: Name a book that wasn't descriptive enough or left you confused.

This book definitely left me confused.
6. Staring Contest: Name a book you thought was going to take forever but was over in the blink of an eye.
This book is 500-600 pages but I breezed through it about 200 pages at a time.

Side Effects-

7. Car crash: Name a book that started great but ended badly.
Again, this book had a killer prologue but after that I couldn't get into it.

8. Amnesia: Name a book that was forgettable or you forgot you read.
I know I liked this book but I can't honestly remember what happens in it or what the character's names are.

9. Broken Limb. Name a book that shattered you.

Don’t Miss the Excerpt Reveal from True Storm by L.E. Sterling, which releases on May 1, 2018!

His hands still on my face. “I’m sorry,” I manage to say, trying to control a nervous need to giggle like a hyena. “Are we fighting? Maybe I didn’t notice because it’s all we ever seem to do.”

A wicked grin lights his features. “That’s not all we seem to do,” he whispers, seconds before he replaces his thumb with his lips.

It’s a soft kiss at first, tentative. Like someone asking your name. But it lights me up, sending fire shooting through my body, heat curling through my belly. I must sigh because Jared pulls back for just a moment, a question in his eyes and hunger written all over him. Then he claims my lips again, holding my face in his hands as the earth spins away from me.

But while Lucy ponders her path, fate has other plans. Betrayal is a cruel lesson, and the Fox sisters can hardly believe who is behind the plot against them. To survive this deadly game of politics, Lucy is forced to agree to a marriage of convenience. But is the DNA of her will stronger than the forces opposing her? "What I'm Reading" Wednesday #112

This week I'm in the middle of preparing to move, but even so I'm listening to an audiobook and reading an eARC of a book that's due out in early May. This "WIR"-Wednesday I'm reading and listening to...

eARC:

Song of Blood and Stone by L. Penelope
Blurb:
A treacherous, thrilling, epic fantasy about an outcast drawn into a war between two powerful rulers.

Orphaned and alone, Jasminda lives in a land where cold whispers of invasion and war linger on the wind. Jasminda herself is an outcast in her homeland of Elsira, where her gift of Earthsong is feared. When ruthless soldiers seek refuge in her isolated cabin, they bring with them a captive--an injured spy who threatens to steal her heart.

Jack's mission behind enemy lines to prove that the Mantle between Elsira and Lagamiri is about to fall nearly cost him his life, but he is saved by the healing Song of a mysterious young woman. Now he must do whatever it takes to save Elsira and it's people from the True Father and he needs Jasminda's Earthsong to do it. They escape their ruthless captors and together they embark on a perilous journey to save Elsira and to uncover the secrets of The Queen Who Sleeps.

Thrust into a hostile society, Jasminda and Jack must rely on one another even as secrets jeopardize their bond. As an ancient evil gains power, Jasminda races to unlock a mystery that promises salvation.

The fates of two nations hang in the balance as Jasminda and Jack must choose between love and duty to fulfill their destinies and end the war.

Why I Requested This Book | What I Think So Far:
I was sent an e-copy of Song of Blood and Stone from St. Martin's Press and I've put off reading it for a while so I could get through some of the other books on my TBR list but now I'm down to my last eARC so it's time. The blurb didn't really appeal to me but I gave it a try and the beginning initially didn't appeal to me. I kept reading and now I'm intrigued and I'm just hoping to stay that way. I've read that Song of Blood and Stone was previously self-published before St. Martin's Press picked it up so they must have seen something in it.

Audiobook:

Second Chance Boyfriend by Monica Murphy
Blurb:
Lost. Everything in my life can be summed up by that one sickening word. My football coach blames me for our season-ending losses. So does the rest of the team. I wasted two whole months drowning in my own despair, like a complete loser. And I lost my girlfriend—Fable Maguire, the only girl who ever mattered—because I was afraid that being with me would only hurt her.

But now I realize that I’m the one who’s truly lost without her. And even though she acts like she’s moved on and everything’s fine, I know she still thinks about me just as much as I think about her. I know her too well. She’s so damn vulnerable, all I want to do is be there to help her . . . to hold her . . . to love her.

I just need her to give me one more chance. We may be lost without each other, but together, we’re destined to find a love that lasts forever.

Why I Chose This Book | What I Think So Far:
I loved reading One Week Girlfriend earlier this month and I decided to use my audible credit for the sequel to Fable and Drew's story. I was able to dive right back into their story in Second Chance Boyfriend and I'm just as addicted to the sequel as I was to the first book and I'm so eager to see how their story will end. One thing I didn't realize was that there were more books in this series after Second Chance Boyfriend. I thought it was a duology but I see on Goodreads there are a few more books after this.

 Exclusive Excerpt:

Ollie runs to the end of the arena, waiting for my cue. Kicking my heels out, I say, “Whoa.” He slides to a stop, the tracks he’s left behind are straight and true. After leaving Emma’s house an hour ago, I desperately needed to get my mind off weddings, and relationships, and stupid men who fuck me and then avoid me after giving me a taste of something I forgot I desperately needed. So, I saddled Ollie and have been going through some reining patterns. Show season is upon us, the first in just over a month, and I want to be sure we’re ready. Lifting my right rein, I roll my spur into his left flank. He spins on the spot, the room around us blurring with the speed of the spin. Stopping him, I let him rest a moment before lifting my left rein and this time rolling my spur into his right flank. He spins in the opposite direction, the tightness of the circle envied by many. Ollie is eight years old and has been my reining horse since we entered the Futurity, the chance for first time reining horses to show what they have and win big, when he was three years old. In the five years I’ve had him, the bond we’ve formed is envied both in and out of the arena. He will be with me until the day he dies, despite offers of tens of thousands of dollars to buy him. Patting Ollie on his neck, I frown when I see Alex through the large windows at the end of the arena. Everything I’ve been trying to clear my head of comes back with a vengeance. It really bothers me that Alex initiated what happened that night, and then proceeded to avoid me like I’m a carrier of the plague. I didn’t ask him to pin me against the counter and kiss me with an explosive passion that still has my body thrumming six months later. Nor did I ask him to wrap my legs around his waist and fuck me until I had the most earth shattering orgasm I’ve ever experienced. Growling, I nudge Ollie into a canter, circling the arena working on lead changes until we are both covered in a sheen of sweat. I love the speed of this sport, and the connection between horse and rider. It’s a testament to how frustrated I am that I don’t feel better after a solid hour of working. Slowing Ollie to a trot, I begin our cooldown. When his breathing has slowed, I dismount and walk him around the arena a couple times to ensure he’s cooled down enough. Leading him to the tie stall, I quickly untack him and rub him down until his coat shines before settling him into his stall with some feed and his supplements. The entire time I perform my tasks, I’m remembering that night with such acuity that by the time I’m done putting his tack away, my body is quivering in need. Scowling, I clench my thighs trying to alleviate the ache, getting more and more pissed off at Alex the entire time. He did this to me. I was fine. I met my own needs and didn’t need anything from anyone. Now, I can’t come unless it’s to images in my head of that night with Alex. He’s ruined my ability to need nothing from anyone. Flipping the lights, I burst through the door cursing under my breath and crash into a hard, hot body. Glancing up, I step back into the now closed door of the barn. “Alex.” Alex’s hazel eyes take in my disheveled appearance. My hair is wild from running patterns with Ollie, my skin covered in a light layer of sweat and dust. When his eyes fall on the slight sliver of skin showing between my jeans and tank top, his eyes shoot back to mine where they bore into my soul. He steps back a foot, his eyes moving between mine and the barn door as he tries to think of something to say. “I didn’t know you were in the barn.” “I was working Ollie. We have a show in May.” Tucking my hands in my back pockets, I lean back, propping one foot against the wall, trying to ignore the way my body has lit up from the inside. I’ve spent the last ninety minutes replaying that one night, and now the object of my desire is standing here looking at me with false indifference. Despite his best efforts, I know he’s still attracted to me, because if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be avoiding me all of the damn time. When he starts to turn without another word, I shove off the wall, closing the distance between us. Enough is enough. I fist my hand in his shirt when he moves to walk away again, and step into him, tilting my head up so he can’t avoid looking at me. “You’ve been avoiding me.” “No . . .” He tries to look away, but I raise my other hand and hold it against the back of his head. “Don’t lie to me, Alex. We used to spend time together, and now you don’t remain in a room with me more than the necessary amount of time to be considered polite. Don’t even get me started on the fact you haven’t been alone with me since the engagement party. “What I don’t get is that you’re the one who initiated that night. You’re the one who made the first move, not me. I haven’t been some clingy chick you picked up in a bar, so what gives?” Holding him in place, I glare up at him, locking his gaze in mine. He sighs and runs a hand down his face before looking at my hand still grasping his shirt. “I’ve been a dick for no reason, haven’t I?” “Well, I wasn’t going to use those exact words, but yeah.” Grinning, I drop my hand when he chuckles softly. “In the heat of the moment, all I could think about was you and how much I wanted to feel you. Afterwards, all I could think about was everyone else and what they would do if they found out. I don’t want a relationship and the pressure would be there, I know how Emma thinks.” His smirk drops into a frown as I gape at him. “That is the lamest thing I’ve ever heard. Your hot factor just dropped by two points.” Crossing my arms over my chest, I narrow my eyes. His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows, but there is a slight smirk he’s fighting at my comment. Cocking my hip out, I scowl. “Let’s go through these one at a time. First off, no one knows what happened and there is no reason for them to know. Second, you’re assuming I want a relationship; that’s something I haven’t had the desire for in a long time. Been there, done that, and I have the emotional scarring as a souvenir.” Alex has made me wonder, hope even, but for the most part I’m still leery of entering a relationship, especially with someone as skittish as Alex, so I don’t feel like I’m lying. “My hot factor?” Alex grins at me, cocking his head to the side in a way that is too cute. He’s trying to distract me, but it won’t work. “Seriously? That’s what you took from that?” Shaking my head, I step toward him and place my hand on his chest, pressing my body into his. For a moment, all I can think about is the hard muscle beneath my hand and remembering the way it looked when he pounded into me. Grinding my teeth, I focus back on the man before me. “All I want is someone I trust to have hot sex with. Get your head out of your ass and think about it. If that’s not what you want, fine, but we’re friends Alex, and it hurts my feelings that it’s so easy for you to forget that.” Lifting onto my toes, I press a chaste kiss to his lips, drawing away before he can react. Brushing past him, I saunter to my house. I’m not a pushover, and I’m not going to let him get away with this shitty behavior any more.

#BookTag Saturday: The #ShadesofMagicalBooks Tag

This week I'm fresh out of bookstagram tags to double for this post so I went searching on twitter and found...

The #ShadesofMagicalBooks Tag was created by Amanda at A Cup of Tea and An Armful of Books. I chose this tag because I got the collector's edition of A Darker Shade of Magic for Christmas last year and I've heard great things about the series. I'm intrigued by the different versions of London.

Moving on to the tag....

1. DULL LONDON: A BOOK THAT BORED YOU

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. I tried reading it, I tried listening to the audiobook. It just dragged.

2. KELL LONDON: A BOOK THAT HOLDS MAGIC FOR YOU

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I loved the world building in the All Souls Trilogy.

3. CREEPY LONDON: A BOOK THAT MADE YOU KEEP YOUR LIGHTS ON

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics still creeps me out and it's been years since I read it.

4.DEAD LONDON: A BOOK THAT GRADUALLY TOOK OVER YOUR LIFE

The whole ACOTAR series is kind of my bookish obsession, but I loved A Court of Mist and Fury the most!

Have you read the Darker Shades of Magic Series? What books would you compare to the four Londons? Drop me a link to your answers in the comments!

Book Review: The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco

The Heart Forger (The Bone Witch #2) by Rin Chupeco
Blurb:
In The Bone Witch, Tea mastered resurrection―now she's after revenge...

No one knows death like Tea. A bone witch who can resurrect the dead, she has the power to take life...and return it. And she is done with her self-imposed exile. Her heart is set on vengeance, and she now possesses all she needs to command the mighty daeva. With the help of these terrifying beasts, she can finally enact revenge against the royals who wronged her―and took the life of her one true love.

But there are those who plot against her, those who would use Tea's dark power for their own nefarious ends. Because you can't kill someone who can never die...

War is brewing among the kingdoms, and when dark magic is at play, no one is safe.

My Review:
The Heart Forger pulls you back into the mesmerizing world Rin Chupeco created in The Bone Witch.

Again told in dual the perspectives of the Bard traveling with the exiled Bone Witch, Tea, her resurrected lover, and her collection of Daeva as well as in Tea’s perspective as she continues to unravel the events leading up to her exile.

In the past a sleeping sickness has fallen over some of the royals in the kingdoms and the gift of a book from the Faceless Dark Asha Tea faced off against in book one as well as the secret bond she has with the azi spell trouble for Tea as she and her friends continue to search for Mykaela’s heartsglass and travel to faraway kingdoms to seek answers.

In the future the Bard begins to understand the reasoning behind the treacherous things Tea is doing as she invades a kingdom and takes over, waiting for those that are after her to find her.

This book was even more amazing than the first book. I had a few questions going in and was afraid I’d forgotten some plot points from the first book since I’d read it but I was able to follow the story as if I’d just read The Bone Witch yesterday.

This story unravels Tea’s past tantalizingly slowly, keeping you on your toes until the end. While some of my questions were answered in this book some will wait to be revealed until the third and final book, but the ending has me dying for the next book already!

I loved seeing Tea grow in this book and fall in love as well as seeing Fox and the girl who has captured his heart.

Overall this book is fantastic. The world building is clear and vivid, the characters are well developed, and the heart stopping tension throughout will keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommend!

“You must be the deer killer,” I stated with a smirk. The stress that once filled her face quickly morphed into irritation. “Excuse me?” she spat. So sexy when she’s mad. I nodded toward her car. “This is your car, isn’t it? The one you hit the deer with last night?” She folded her arms across her chest, her eyes narrowing at me. “Were you there to see me hit it?” she asked. And she was a smart ass. How cute. “Well, with the blood on your car, the alien egg on your forehead there, and the fact that you’re not in jail for hitting a person…I think it’s safe to assume you’re the deer killer,” I stated, the smirk never leaving my face. Her tanned skin turned a light shade of red as she placed the baseball cap back on her head, trying to rearrange her bangs to hide the knot. I glanced over to her two friends, both of them watching us with grins plastered to their faces. “Hey, space cadet, want to come back to Earth to tell me the damage or are you just going to stare at my friends?” she snapped. “You’re funny, you know that?” I mused, wagging my finger at her. She rolled her eyes. “First, I’ll properly introduce myself. I’m—” “An asshole,” she interrupted. I chuckled. “Sadly, that isn’t it, though I’ve been called that plenty of times.” “Yeah, I don’t doubt that,” she muttered under her breath. “Look, I don’t care what your name is. Just tell me what’s going on with my car.” “The deer killer is impatient, I see,” I said, ignoring the glare she gave me. “In order to get an idea, I need to know the details of what happened.” She looked at me with wide eyes and exaggerated shock as she placed her hand on her chest. “Details, you say?” she asked. “But I thought you had it all figured out ‘considering that I’m not in jail, that there’s blood over my car, and I have an alien egg on my forehead,’ remember? Now Inspector Gadget wants details!” I stare at her for a moment, my smirk never wavering. “Are you done? I mean I have all day, pretty lady. Keep going if that’s what excites you.” She scowled. “Whatever. I hit a deer and ran into a ditch. The end.” “I see. Did you see how big it was?” “Hell if I know. It was dark,” she muttered. I took a few steps away from her and re-examined the front of the car once more, stroking the stubble on my chin. “Well, you’ll need a windshield, hood, a few parts to reconstruct the front, like a grill and headlights. You’re also leaking antifreeze, so you’ll have to get that fixed. I wouldn’t be surprised if you need a new radiator either. This deer did a number on your car,” I said. She looked at the car warily, nibbling on her bottom lip again. Wonder if they’re as soft as they look. “How far in the hole am I then?” she asked, wringing her hands together. “It’s still too early to know officially since I haven’t looked under the hood yet, but just by looking at it…probably $2,500 if I don’t find anything else.” “Fuck!” She pinched the bridge of her nose and blew out a breath. “I’m so fucked.” She stumbled forward slightly, her hand catching against the window. “Whoa, you all right?” I asked, securing her other arm. She snatched away from me. “Don’t touch me,” she said, her voice a bit breathless. I held my hands up stepped back. That was probably well-deserved considering I’d been acting like an ass. “Okay then. I’ll be sure to look away when you’re ready to faceplant into the ground and crack your head open.” “Stop talking while you’re ahead, asshole,” she snapped. “I’m fine. I just need a minute.”
