It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 1 July 2019

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

Hey Bookdragons! I'm finishing up some June reads and starting my July TBR list this week...

What I Read Last Week:
I've been meaning to read this book since it came out and I finally got a chance to pick it up. I wish I'd read it sooner because I loved it!
This was my first YA BOTM selection and I was afraid I wouldn't like it but it was such a quick, awesome read!
This book was okay, I just didn't like it as much as the book I read before it. For some reason f/f romances are easier for me to get into than m/m. I also didn't get a lot of the 80s references. It was an interesting look at the AIDS epidemic in the 80s.

What I Am Reading Now:
I've been looking forward to this book for a long time but I'm choosing to listen to it slowly and savor the ending of this awesome trilogy.
I watched this movie on Christmas (I know, strange movie choice but we do horror or thriller movies on Christmas because we're sick of happy family Christmas movies) and I've been wanting to read the book ever since. I finally picked up a copy when I was at Target last week and I'm about 20% in.

Up Next:
Next up for me is...
I got this audiobook on Libro.fm a couple months ago now and it's finally at the top of my audiobook TBR.
I'll be reading this one for a blog tour scheduled for the end of the month. It sounds really cool.
What are you reading this week?

I Love Characters... A Most Unusual Character

I 💚 Characters is a weekly meme created by Dani @ Perspective of a Writer, to show off our favorite characters. Be sure to check out her blog for more info! This week’s topic is ...

A Most Unusual Character
Am I the only one who feels like they don't fit in? This week's theme is all about the characters that are zany, quirky, and definitely don't fit the mold. So I choose...

Zila Madran - Aurora Legion Squad 312's Brain
Described as "A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates" in the blurb, Zila is quiet, aloof, scary smart, and seemingly disinterested in the happenings around her. Her head in the clouds persona usually gives way to spot on theories... when she's not blasting one of her squadmates with her disrupter (her favorite accessory).

We don't get to see a lot of chapters in her perspective in Aurora Rising and those that we do see are fairly short but I get the feeling that she's seen some awful things, secretly has a big heart that she chooses to keep well guarded, and will become a shining star in this trilogy.

Start reading about her in...

Friday Night Frights - Teeth in the Mist Spotlight and Movie Rec

Hey Bookdragons! Since this meme went over really well last week I'm making it a weekly thing and you're all free to join in! Just tell me a horror novel you loved (it doesn't have to be a new release) and recommend a horror movie you love! That's it, as simple as that!

Teeth In The Mist by Dawn Kurtagich
Before the birth of time, a monk uncovers the Devil's Tongue and dares to speak it. The repercussions will be felt for generations...

Sixteen-year-old photography enthusiast Zoey has been fascinated by the haunted, burnt-out ruins of Medwyn Mill House for as long as she can remember--so she and her best friend, Poulton, run away from home to explore them. But are they really alone in the house? And who will know if something goes wrong?

In 1851, seventeen-year-old Roan arrives at the Mill House as a ward--one of three, all with something to hide from their new guardian. When Roan learns that she is connected to an ancient secret, she must escape the house before she is trapped forever.

1583. Hermione, a new young bride, accompanies her husband to the wilds of North Wales where he plans to build the largest water mill and mansion in the area. But rumors of unholy rituals lead to a tragic occurrence and she will need all her strength to defeat it.

Three women, centuries apart, drawn together by one Unholy Pact. A pact made by a man who, more than a thousand years later, may still be watching...

What I loved about Teeth in the Mist:
Dawn Kurtagich's books are all fantastic in their own way, but this one might be my favorite. Set in three times, we have Hermione, a newlywed bride in the 1580s who everyone begins to think is a witch or a demon and she's the reason her husband's workers, then her children, and her husband begin to disappear mysteriously.

Then in the 1850s we have Roan who is sent to live with a stranger at Mill House (the same house Hermione's husband was building in the 1500s) after the death of her oft-times cruel father. She's got a dark side to her that her father both nurtured and feared. But is she the daughter of the devil?

Finally, we have Zoey in the present time who goes to Mill House looking for answers years after her father went there (being obsessed with the place and looking for answers of his own about his origins) and lost his mind.

Mill House is the stuff of nightmares. Hard to get to, dilapidated and humored haunted, the sight of unexplained disappearances, and perhaps home to the devil himself. I love haunted house books but this creepy tale takes things to a whole new level.

Did I mention this is a retelling of Faustus? It's an awesome horror-fantasy mash-up and I loved every minute of it!

Movie Rec: Jennifer's Body
Okay, let me be frank: this movie isn't all that great but it kind of sticks with you after you're done watching it. And for some reason it reminds me of the book Last Things by Jaqueline West... I get those same kind of vibes.

"After a supernatural romp with a satanic emo band, hot cheerleader Jennifer (Megan Fox) is transformed into a demon with an insatiable appetite for high school boys."

We have Megan Fox, who I always tend to think of as the mean girl character, Amanda Seyfried who plays the annoying best friend (such a weird pairing you wonder how that happened), and Adam Brody as the lead singer of the satanic emo band. Adam Brody looks like someone who would play in an emo band.

We start out seeing Amanda Seyfried's "Needy" in jail but instead of the innocent mouselike character she is for the rest of the movie she's a bit of a badass.

The movie backpedals to before and we see Jennifer and Needy together as Jennifer convinces Needy to go to a bar to see an emo band nobody has ever heard of. It's clearly a local dive bar with small town people in it and the band is so clearly a fish out of water it's nearly comical. But Jennifer's into it despite Needy's concerns.

A fire breaks out, Jennifer leaves with the band, and hours later shows up at Needy's covered in blood which she then vomits all over the kitchen floor. Gross right? Well apparently the band thought she was a virgin and tried to sacrifice her for ultimate fame and fortune but it backfires and Jennifer becomes a monster.

The rest of the move basically dissolves into Needy trying to stop Jennifer from eating all the teenage boys in town, including Needy's loser boyfriend.

I've heard this movie called a "cult classic" and it's not really scary, just sort of stupid, so if you're looking for a low-budget-no-talent-spoof-of-a-horror-movie to watch with a bunch of friends on a boring Friday night then I definitely recommend this one.

Bookish and Not So Bookish Thoughts - 13 June 2019

Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts is a Weekly Meme hosted by Christine @ Bookishly  Boisterous.

Happy Thursday Bookdragons! I hope you're having a good week.

1. I'm having another not-so-great week. I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm starting to think I've been misdiagnosed and the depression is just a small part of a bigger problem. I'm so angry all the time lately, just furious over small stupid stuff. Doing a little digging it looks like bipolar but I'm scared to go to the doctor because the last time I went my PA treated me like I was making things up for attention. I just wish I had some answers.

2. Have you ever read a book by an author you've read before and found that the book is essentially the same as another one of their books except with a different title and just a few different details? I read Escape from Asylum by Madeleine Roux earlier this week, which is a prequel to her Asylum trilogy but this one is set in the late 60s. Other than Brookline being in this book a working Asylum instead of converted into a college dorm I feel like this book and Asylum are basically the same plot. I ended up DNF'ing it which is disappointing because I love horror novels and movies set in asylums.

3. I'm finding lately that I have more time to listen to audiobooks than reading actual books the normal way so I've been listening every night before bed. I tried while I was working out but I couldn't heard it so well over the exercise bike, my iPhone doesn't have a headphone jack anymore, and I'm not buying an adaptor.

4. I finally tracked down a copy of the Dutch edition of Heartless by Marissa Meyer! I've been looking for this one since I first saw the cover and I finally found a copy on Amazon. It's even more gorgeous in person!

5. I got a new bookcase today! Right now it's still in the box but I'm planning to assemble it either tomorrow or this weekend and get my books transferred in! My cat won't be to wipe his damn butt on top of my books anymore!

I Can't Wait for... RULES FOR VANISHING!

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.

I've been really into horror and thriller novels lately and this is near the top of my fall TBR list...

Rules for Vanishing
Standalone
By Kate Alice Marshall
YA Horror, Mystery
eBook, Hardcover, 416 Pages
September 24, 2019 by Viking Books for Young Readers

Blurb
In the faux-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project comes the campfire story of a missing girl, a vengeful ghost, and the girl who is determined to find her sister--at all costs.

Once a year, the path appears in the forest and Lucy Gallows beckons. Who is brave enough to find her--and who won't make it out of the woods?

It's been exactly one year since Sara's sister, Becca, disappeared, and high school life has far from settled back to normal. With her sister gone, Sara doesn't know whether her former friends no longer like her...or are scared of her, and the days of eating alone at lunch have started to blend together. When a mysterious text message invites Sara and her estranged friends to "play the game" and find local ghost legend Lucy Gallows, Sara is sure this is the only way to find Becca--before she's lost forever. And even though she's hardly spoken with them for a year, Sara finds herself deep in the darkness of the forest, her friends--and their cameras--following her down the path. Together, they will have to draw on all of their strengths to survive. The road is rarely forgiving, and no one will be the same on the other side.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Unpopular Bookish Opinions

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and The Bookish and currently hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Unpopular Bookish Opinions

This week's TTT I'm letting you in on a few secrets. Unpopular bookish opinions to be exact. But shhhhh you can't tell anyone what I really think on a few of these books... it will be our little secret. You, me, and the entire interwebs...

1. I thought The Cruel Prince was overrated and I only bought The Wicked King because I heard it was better than TCP.

2. I love Sarah J. Maas's books, but I DNF'd A Court of Wings and Ruin. I thought it was boring compared to ACOMAF and could have been wayyyyy shorter.

3. I actually really love "love triangles" in books

4. The Keira Knightley adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. While I think Colin Firth is lacking just enough in personality to play Mr. Darcy, I just can't get behind him as a love interest. *gags*

5.I thought the adaptation of To All the Boys I Loved Before was really cheesy and I don't understand the hype over the movie/books.

6. I love Erin Watt's Royals Series and I disagree that it promotes toxic teen relationships.

7. I liked Twilight as a teenager. And yes, I was team Edward. *shrugs* There. I said it.

8. I read all the Harry Potter books but they'll never be my favorite books/series.

9. I find people who think certain fantasy books are insensitive are idiots. They're fantasy... they're not meant to represent any true culture even if they take basic influences from them. Furthermore, books should never be burned just because you don't like them.

10. Escaping from Houdini is my least favorite book in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series so far.

What are some of your unpopular bookish opinions? Are any as big of doozies as mine?
Let me know in the comments or drop me a link to your TTT!
Happy Reading Bookdragons!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 10 June 2019

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

Hey Bookdragons! I'm plowing through my June TBR so far. Let me get you caught up...

What I Read Last Week:
I finished reading this one on Friday and I enjoyed it a lot. Funnily enough the characters I liked the most were Selah's suitors and the secondary characters.
The Haunted is such an awesome read! I read it in a single sitting.
Hello Bookish Obsession! I loved this book from start to finish. If you like thrillers/suspense/murder mysteries, feuding siblings, and prestigious boarding schools you're going to love this one!

What I Am Reading Now:
Following my plan of reading a physical book by day and listening to an audiobook at night before bed I started listening to Aurora Rising over the weekend. I'm not far in yet but I'm intrigued.
As for my physical read I'm continuing my horror trend with Escape from Asylum. I've read the Asylum trilogy but hadn't had a chance to read this one yet and I'm interested get into this prequel.

Up Next:
Next up for me is...
It's time to wrap up my time in the world of Caraval. I've loved listening to these books in audiobook so I had to have it in both HC and audio formats like the previous two.

The next (and last) physical book on my June TBR is Warcross, a book I have been meaning to read since it first released.
What are you reading this week?
