Top Ten Tuesday:SIX Books On My TBR I’m Avoiding Reading and Why
This week's TTT is all about books we have on our shelves or our TBR list (on Goodreads or otherwise) that we're avoiding for whatever reason. For me, most of these are because I've heard mixed reviews or I'm afraid they won't live up to the hype, or that my feelings for the book will not match up to the enthusiasm of my friends.
2. Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
Why: I've heard mixed things about this one. People love it or hate it. I don't want to hate it...
3. Kiss Collector by Wendy Higgins
Why: I love Wendy Higgins, I do. I've read all of her other books and she's opened me up to genres outside of my comfort zone. I like reading contemporary occasionally... I just don't know if I'd like this one. It just sounds sort of... stupid? Man I hate saying that. But thats the way I feel.
4. Slayer by Kiersten White
Why: Late to the game but I binged Buffy last year and loved it. I like the sound of this book but I haven't been able to get into any of Kiersten White's previous books, they've all ended up on the DNF pile and I don't want to wreck my love for the buffyverse.
5.We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal
Why: There was a ton of hype for this book before it came out and my fear is that everyone has created so many expectations that this book will fall short.
6. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
Why: I love the movie and I know the book is a lot different than the movie and I'm nervous that I'll spend the entire time making comparisons.

Happy Reading Bookdragons!
The Girl on the Train is good but the mystery is already revealed if you watched the movie. Skip it. There are so many other books. My TBR books I'm avoiding
ReplyDeleteGirls of Paper and Fire is one of my favorite books of the year and can't wait for the sequel.

I haven't read King of Scars yet, because there so much hype surrounding it, and I want to read the grisha trilogy first because there set in the same world and I wanted to read them since I finished six of crows duology.

I was not a big fan of Slayer, but I hope you have a different reaction to it. And, yeah, mixed reviews influence how willing I am to try a book as well (assuming the reviewers have similar tastes to me).
ReplyDeleteMy TTT.
I'm typically put off by a lot of hype as well. I typically wait for it to calm down a bit before reading much hyped books. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to love Girl on the Train, but that hype thing ended up kind of ruining it for me. It was the whole Gone Girl comparison.
ReplyDeleteMy reasons for putting off We Hunt the Flame are exactly the same!

I put off Slayer for a long time too, but I'm so glad I finally read it!

I quite liked Slayer. It's difficult to separate yourself from hype or negative reviews, as well as the original world/characters from Buffy. It can be totally daunting. If ever you read it, you should likely just approach it cautiously and remember that it doesn't follow Buffy or any of those characters--which is key to not letting it 'wreck' your love of it. It is only slightly related, you know what I mean? That being said, I feel like since you've not especially enjoyed White's work in the past you should probably just skip it entirely just because!
