Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Books I Wish I'd Read As A Child
This week's TTT is all about books we wish we'd read as a child/preteen/teen (I'm bending things a little). Most of these I honestly didn't read at the time because I read mostly YA Contemporary novels as a preteen/teen. I don't think I started reading fantasy until whichever year A Court of Mist and Fury came out... and by then I was in my 20s. So without further delay...
1.The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
I know everyone loves these books and they came out when I was in the 7th grade... but at the time I was more interested in reading about romance and boys. haha.
2. A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle
I think a teacher tried to read this to the class once, I just didn't pay too much attention to it.
3. Artemis Foul by Eoin Colfer
4. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
5. Coraline by Neil Gaiman
6.The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
I saw a lot of people reading these when I was in elementary/middle school but it never appealed to me.
7. I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan
You know, I love the movie adaptation but I never got around to reading the book. I have read other books by Lois Duncan though and enjoyed them.
8. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
I think the first one of these came out around the same time as the first Twilight book but for some reason I never picked up on it.
9. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz
What books were popular when you were a kid that you skipped or missed out on?
In my defense, I read the major ones that were popular as I was growing up... Harry Potter, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Twilight, all of those terribly depressing books where the dog or the best friend dies that school make required reading, the middle grade books meant to teach about the holocaust... the ones listed above were just ones I either was scared to read (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Coraline, Scary Stories) or didn't like the genre of when I was younger.

Happy Reading Bookdragons!
You have some wonderful books on your list. I loved A TWINKLE IN TIME so much as a kid and ERAGON and THE GOLDEN COMPASS as an adult.
ReplyDeleteNice list. I wish I'd ready Percy Jackson earlier as well, I just read it last November and I really would have enjoyed it years ago!

I got a giggle out of your commentary below book #4. I was the same way. Boys were cool if they had a beloved horse or dog companion -- they generally didn't die in the books I read, because I read about a thousand of them -- or were Native Americans in the 18th/19th century, but otherwise they were out of luck on holding my interest.
ReplyDeleteAlso similar feelings on Golden Compass. I had Harry Potter, that was all the fantasy series I needed. (...I guess he was an exception to my anti-boy rule) There were seriously so many books everyone was raving about that I just refused to touch: Phantom Tollbooth, Bridge to Terabithia, Wrinkle in Time, The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings...
I did read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but honestly, I hated the creepy illustrations and much preferred the tamer Tales for the Midnight Hour series for my kiddie scares.
And lastly, wow, you reminded me that I still haven't read that book of Duncan's OR seen the movie, even though I always wanted to try both. I got distracted by both versions of her Killing Mr. Griffin instead, because the movie starred my beloved Amy Jo Johnson (and also, as I just learned this very second, Mario Lopez? OK, now I want to rewatch it).
Funny about Wrinkle in Time. I always read that one to my fifth graders. I hope they enjoyed it. lol

ReplyDeleteA Wrinkle in Time is such a good book. Do you think you'll ever read it? (No pressure, though).
ReplyDeleteMy TTT.
I had Coraline and The Golden Compass on my list this week too! Percy Jackson and Artemis Fowl were staples of my teen life, I found them both when I was around 14.

I love a Wrinkle in Time as a kid. My friend Lydia that I used to work with LOVED The Vampire Academy, but I still haven't read them yet.
ReplyDeleteI loved I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan as a kid! I also read that entire Wrinkle in Time series. So good!
ReplyDeleteA Wrinkle In Time is also on my list this week.
ReplyDeleteI was too scared to read Scary Stories when I was little!
