19 Upcoming Winter Releases You'll Want to Curl Up With

It's already December (when did that happen?) and I'm ready to climb out of the cave I isolated myself in during NaNoWriMo and dive into some new books to get me through the cold, miserable winter months. Here are 19 Upcoming Winter Releases You Should add to your TBR list this season!

YA Retelling
Blurb:
Wendy doesn't remember anything about Neverland—or the experiments done on her there as a child. Seven years later, all she wants is a normal life, but shape-shifting shadows plague her dreams and turn her life into a waking nightmare. When the shadows attack at a football game and a boy disappears right in front of her, she realizes these wraith-like shadows are real. They’re not just haunting—they’re hunting.

A mysterious boy named Peter, his foul-mouthed sidekick, and a band of misfit boys intervene before Wendy faces a similar fate. But can they trust Wendy enough to take her to Neverwood Academy and reveal all of their hidden secrets when she's hiding a secret of her own, or will the dreaded Red Skulls find her and drag her back to Neverland?

Why I Want to Read This Book:
I'm really into retellings or fairytale inspired novels lately and this one sounds really cool. I've seen a few different Peter Pan inspired novels before but this is a different take that sounds really interesting.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
Maybe it's the title. Maybe it's the awesome cover. Maybe it's the blurb. But there's something about this book that has me dying to pick up a copy. I've never read anything by this author before, but this sounds like something I'd love.

5. The Book Jumper by Mechthild Gläser
The Book Jumper
Mechthild Gläser
January 3, 2017
YA Fantasy
Blurb:
Amy Lennox doesn't know quite what to expect when she and her mother pick up and leave Germany for Scotland, heading to her mother's childhood home of Lennox House on the island of Stormsay.

Amy's grandmother, Lady Mairead, insists that Amy must read while she resides at Lennox House—but not in the usual way. It turns out that Amy is a book jumper, able to leap into a story and interact with the world inside. As thrilling as Amy's new power is, it also brings danger: someone is stealing from the books she visits, and that person may be after her life. Teaming up with fellow book jumper Will, Amy vows to get to the bottom of the thefts—at whatever cost.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
I love the idea of book jumping. This book kind of reminds me of the book Jodi Picoult cowrote with her daughter, Between the Lines - but that was kind of in reverse, the characters in the book were alive. It will be interesting to read this take on a person able to enter a written story. Because don't we all secretly fantasize about doing that?

6. Teen Hyde (High School Horror #2) by Chandler Baker
Teen Hyde
Chandler Baker
January 10, 2017
YA Horror
Blurb:
Cassidy Hyde is NOT having a good year. Her boyfriend cheated on her, killed her best friend's date during homecoming, and was then murdered in turn by a serial killer, and that's without counting the thing that no one knows about. (But Cassidy doesn't like to think about that.) The point is, anyone would be a little depressed and no one can blame her for looking for a little bit of help. That's where Sunshine comes in. This new experimental drug makes Cassidy feel like everything is good and she's the golden girl once again. A little memory loss feels like a small price to pay to get her life back. And the fact that boys are once again going missing (boys who Cassidy does NOT want to remember) has NOTHING to do with anything! Right?

Why I Want To Read This Book:
This book sounds like it might be more comical than scary but we'll see. Is it horror? Doesn't matter what genre this book is, a reimagining of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde is something that hasn't been completely overdone so I'm going to give it a try.

7. RoseBlood by A.G. Howard
RoseBlood
A.G. Howard
January 10, 2017
YA Retelling
Blurb:
Rune Germaine moves to a boarding school outside of Paris, only to discover that at this opera-house-turned-music-conservatory, phantoms really do exist. RoseBlood is a Phantom of the Opera–inspired retelling in which Rune’s biggest talent—her voice—is also her biggest curse. Fans of Daughter of Smoke and Bone and the Splintered series will find themselves captivated by this pulse-pounding spin on a classic tale.

Rune, whose voice has been compared to that of an angel, has a mysterious affliction linked to her talent that leaves her sick and drained at the end of every performance. Convinced creative direction will cure her, her mother ships her off to a French boarding school for the arts, rumored to have a haunted past.

Shortly after arriving at RoseBlood conservatory, Rune starts to believe something otherworldly is indeed afoot. The mystery boy she’s seen frequenting the graveyard beside the opera house doesn’t have any classes at the school, and vanishes almost as quickly as he appears. When Rune begins to develop a secret friendship with the elusive Thorn, who dresses in clothing straight out of the 19th century, she realizes that in his presence she feels cured. Thorn may be falling for Rune, but the phantom haunting RoseBlood wants her for a very specific and dangerous purpose. As their love continues to grow, Thorn is faced with an impossible choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or save her and face the wrath of the phantom, the only father he’s ever known.

Why You'll Want to Read This Book:
If you're a fan of A.G. Howard you already know this book is going to be great. If you're new to the author (like I was) you'll fall in love with A.G. Howard's beautiful retelling of The Phantom of the Opera. The characters, the storyline, and the setting are all superb. This book made me a fan of the Phantom of the Opera too because I immediately put the movie version at the top of my Netflix queue. I highly recommend this one!

8. Beheld (Kendra Chronicles #4) by Alex Flinn
Beheld
Alex Flinn
January 10, 2017
YA Retelling
Blurb:
Being a powerful witch, Kendra has survived it all. Since she first beheld James over three hundred years ago, Kendra has tangled with witch hunters and wolves, helped a miller’s daughter spin straw into gold, cowered in London as German bombs fell, and lived through who knows how many shipwrecks. But her powers have limits, and immortality can be lonely. Kendra isn’t ready to stop searching for the warlock she had met centuries ago.

With the help of her magic mirror, Kendra will travel the world to reconnect with her lost love—and, of course, she can’t help but play a hand in a few more stories along the way.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
I'm new to this series and I know starting at book four sounds insane, but this one sound really good. I didn't even realize until I read the blurb on Amazon that this is the same witch from Beastly. This was a book I was attracted to just because of the cover.

9. The Last Harvest by Kim Ligget
The Last Harvest
Kim Liggett
January 10, 2017
YA Horror
Blurb:
"I plead the blood."

Those were the last words seventeen-year-old golden boy quarterback Clay Tate heard rattling from his dad's throat when he discovered him dying on the barn floor of the Neely cattle ranch, clutching a crucifix to his chest.

Now, on the first anniversary of the Midland, Oklahoma, slaughter, the whole town's looking at Clay like he might be next to go over the edge. Clay wants to forget the past, but the sons and daughters of the Preservation Society―a group of prominent farmers his dad accused of devil worship―won't leave him alone. Including Ali, his longtime crush, who suddenly wants to reignite their romance after a year of silence, and hated rival Tyler Neely, who's behaving like they're old friends.

Even as Clay tries to reassure himself, creepy glances turn to sinister stares and strange coincidences build to gruesome rituals―but when he can never prove that any of it happened, Clay worries he might be following his dad down the path to insanity...or that something far more terrifying lies in wait around the corner.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
I loved Kim Ligget's Blood and Salt and this book sounds like it's on a similar but different wavelength and I can't wait to dive into this book as I wait for the second book in the Blood and Salt series.

10. After the Fall by Kate Hart
After the Fall
Kate Hart
January 24, 2017
YA Contemporary
Blurb:
Seventeen-year-old Raychel is sleeping with two boys: her overachieving best friend Matt…and his slacker brother, Andrew. Raychel sneaks into Matt’s bed after nightmares, but nothing ever happens. He doesn’t even seem to realize she’s a girl, except when he decides she needs rescuing. But Raychel doesn't want to be his girl anyway. She just needs his support as she deals with the classmate who assaulted her, the constant threat of her family’s eviction, and the dream of college slipping quickly out of reach. Matt tries to help, but he doesn’t really get it… and he’d never understand why she’s fallen into a secret relationship with his brother. The friendships are a precarious balance, and when tragedy strikes, everything falls apart. Raychel has to decide which pieces she can pick up – and which ones are worth putting back together.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
This book sounds raw and realistic and in a sea of upcoming books that are retellings or fantasy, this book sounds refreshing. I love books like this, where teens face obstacles and learn who they are and who they are becoming. It reminds me of the days of YA novels before Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, and those type of books took over. While I love my fantasy novels, sometimes it's nice to come back to the real world.

Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
Every blogger I know has either read this book and loved it or is extremely excited for its' release. In a way, it kind of reminds me of what I think "Freeks" is about but in a different way. I think this one somehow makes me think of a traveling circus or carnival too. This isn't a must-read-or-I-will-die upcoming release, but I would like to see what it's all about.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
This book sounds like it's steeped in mythology and retelling. Could it be that it's inspired by the Persephone myth but with a German-esque setting? I haven't even read this book yet and I think I might already love it.

14. Riveted (Saints of Denver #3) by Jay Crownover
Riveted
Jay Crownover
February 14, 2017
NA Romance
Blurb:
Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael’s life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that’s become her home away from home. Nope. No more chasing the hot as heck thundercloud of a man and no more waiting for Mr. Right to find her; she’s going hunting for him...even if she knows her heart is stuck on its stupid infatuation with Dash Churchill.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. It was supposed to be simple, uneventful, but nothing could have prepared him for the bubbly, bouncy redhead with doe eyes and endless curves. Now he knows it’s time to get out of Denver, fast. For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying.

When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

Why I Want To Read This Book:
I love Jay Crownover as an author, but I haven't been as in love with her Saints of Denver spinoff series. I thought it would be more about the tattoo artists that Nash and Rule would hire at their new shop "Saints of Denver"; but really it's been about the minor background characters from the Marked Men series. I like the books and I want to read this one, but I'm not as excited about this one as some of the other ones listed here.
