It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 15 March 2021

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

Happy Monday Bookdragons! I hope your week is off to a good start! I started my new job last week so I don't have as much reading time now but I still managed to plow through a 600+ page book last week.

What I Read Last Week:

The Dead and The Dark by Courtney Gould

I technically finished this book the weekend before but I had a busy weekend over the 5th, 6th, and 7th so I missed last week's post. It started slow but I really loved it by the end. There were times I wanted to strangle the people of Snakebite though. I definitely recommend checking The Dead and The Dark out when it releases in August.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I put off reading this one for a long time because I really wasn't in a fantasy mood last year. Finally I decided to read it after seeing a lot of people raving about it on bookstagram and I'm really happy I did. Despite it's size (600+ pages) I couldn't read it fast enough.

Currently Reading:

Island of Bones by Gaby Triana

I immediately wanted to read this book after finishing Moon Child by Gaby a couple weeks ago. I debated on splurging on it and a few other books and finally went for it so I'll be starting it tonight. It seems like a fairly short read which will be a nice break after From Blood and Ash.

Next Read

Shiver by Allie Reynolds

This was another of my book splurges last week and I'm really looking forward to starting it because I keep seeing it on bookstagram.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 22 June 2020

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

Happy Monday Bookdragons! It's eight days until moving day and I'm so excited. On the other hand my reading time has dwindled as I pack up my remaining books and get everything ready to go.

What I Read Last Week:

Warmaidens by Kelly Coon

I was granted an eARC of this last Thursday and planned to binge it over the weekend. But I couldn't wait and started it right away instead. I really enjoyed Gravemaidens (book 1) but Warmaidens was even better!
(Full review to come closer to the October release date)

Currently Reading:

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

I really wanted to reread this series so I'm listening to the audiobook of SJTR. Funny story... I actually read Hunting Prince Dracula before Stalking Jack the Ripper the first time around - both in physical format - so I'm enjoying the audio narration right now.

Next Read:

The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

I've been holding off reading this one for a while and I think now I'm finally ready to tackle it.

FRIDAY NIGHT FRIGHTS: RULES FOR VANISHING SPOTLIGHT

Hey Bookdragons! Welcome to the 4th installment of the Friday Night Frights meme!

How It Works:
On your blog feature a horror novel you loved (it doesn't have to be a new release) and recommend a horror movie you love then come back here and post your link in the comments! That's it, as simple as that!

Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall
In the faux-documentary style of The Blair Witch Project comes the campfire story of a missing girl, a vengeful ghost, and the girl who is determined to find her sister--at all costs.

Once a year, the path appears in the forest and Lucy Gallows beckons. Who is brave enough to find her--and who won't make it out of the woods?

It's been exactly one year since Sara's sister, Becca, disappeared, and high school life has far from settled back to normal. With her sister gone, Sara doesn't know whether her former friends no longer like her...or are scared of her, and the days of eating alone at lunch have started to blend together. When a mysterious text message invites Sara and her estranged friends to "play the game" and find local ghost legend Lucy Gallows, Sara is sure this is the only way to find Becca--before she's lost forever. And even though she's hardly spoken with them for a year, Sara finds herself deep in the darkness of the forest, her friends--and their cameras--following her down the path. Together, they will have to draw on all of their strengths to survive. The road is rarely forgiving, and no one will be the same on the other side.

What I loved about Rules for Vanishing:
This book is classic urban legend horror that will transport the reader back to their childhood, telling scary stories at sleepovers or around the campfire. Lucy Gallows is a local urban legend in Sara's hometown and her sister disappeared a year ago chasing down the truth. Desperate for answers Sara and her friends find the path and try their best to follow the "rules" as they search for Becca. But in true horror fashion, they will encounter tragedy along the way and not everyone who steps foot on the path will come out alive on the other side. It's eerie, creepy, and mesmerizing. I read this book in a single day and I still can't get over it.

Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall releases September 24th. Preorder your copy now!

Movie Rec: IT: Chapter Two
I have been waiting for this movie since I saw the first half. It felt like an eternity in between so I'm not the least bit embarrassed to say that I arrived at the movie theater before it even opened this morning and was the first person in the door to catch the 10:30 am showing.

"In the summer of 1989, evil entity Pennywise terrorized a band of children from Derry, Maine. Twenty-seven years later, Pennywise returns, but this time the group is all grown up and ready to destroy the malevolent being."

First let's talk about the casting. I love James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain so their being in the second chapter of the it remake was an added bonus. I thought overall the people who cast Chapter Two did a fantastic job finding adult actors who resembled the child actor counterparts. And can we talk for a minute about the hotness that is Jay Ryan (who plays the adult version of Ben)?!?! Bill Hader also shone as the adult version of Ritchie - actually I think his character was the one I felt the more emotion toward because of his struggle with his identity. It was a powerful portrayal.

Being the second half of the IT story we see the kids from the first movie in flashbacks as their adult counterparts return to Derry to finally conquer Pennywise. It gives us extra insight into the aspect of their lives and their beings that we didn't see in the first movie.

Overall, I thought this movie was even better than the first part and even though it's a nearly 3 hour movie I didn't lose interest in the story. The plot is richer, the scares are bigger, and Stephen King even makes a cameo! If you're not afraid of clowns and are looking for a good scary movie head on down to your local movie theater and check this one out!

Bookish & Not So Bookish Thoughts - 9 May 2019

Bookish (And Not So Bookish) Thoughts is a Weekly Meme hosted by Christine @ Bookishly  Boisterous.

Happy Thursday Bookdragons! It's another Bookish and Not So Bookish Thoughts and today I'm trying to distract myself and keep my nerves down until tonight.

1. The ApollyCon 2020 Tickets go on sale tonight and I am really nervous. I definitely want to go, already have my hotel room booked, I just need my ticket. There are 600 tickets available for the tier I'm looking at and my fear is that they will sell out within seconds and I'll be fighting with my wifi to get a transaction through. Wish me luck!

2. I seem to be getting past my book rut. I started my ARC of Rage by Cora Carmack yesterday and read 111 pages in one day. It's been weeks since the last time I was able to do that. I've also been listening to a couple audiobooks that I'm enjoying.

3. I did a guest post this week on BookCrushin's Blog talking about writing through depression. It just went live today so go check it out!

4. The apartment we looked at earlier this week didn't work out. We were told (no joke) that I made too much money to be eligible for the apartment. I've never heard that one before...

5. I mentioned last week that I was listening to the audiobook of We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia and I finished it earlier this week. I definitely recommend it if you're a fan of The Handmaid's Tale (like I am). It definitely has those vibes as well as a latinex rep!
