The Saturday Review - December 15, 2018

The Hallowed Ones (The Hallowed Ones #1) by Laura Bickle
Blurb:
Katie is on the verge of her Rumspringa, the time in Amish life when teenagers can get a taste of the real world. But the real world comes to her in this dystopian tale with a philosophical bent. Rumors of massive unrest on the “Outside” abound. Something murderous is out there. Amish elders make a rule: No one goes outside, and no outsiders come in. But when Katie finds a gravely injured young man, she can’t leave him to die. She smuggles him into her family’s barn—at what cost to her community? The suspense of this vividly told, truly horrific thriller will keep the pages turning.

My Review:
THIS BOOK! OMG! Imagine the movie The Happening meets horrific vampires meets Breaking Amish... maybe with a little of Contagion?

I usually don't like apocalyptic books but when I read the blurb for this one and saw it on Kindle Unlimited I had to read it! The story lured me in right from the beginning with Katie's wishes for Rumspringa and the Amish people's isolation from the rest of the world.

There's romance, heart-stopping discoveries, danger and a good dose of rebellion in this book. I think one of my favorite parts was when Katie goes into the laundromat... definitely got the creepy chills there! Overall I think the author is trying to tell us that you have to believe in something, no matter what religion it is, to survive when the world goes to hell.

I love this book, can't wait to read The Outside, and recommend it for anyone looking for a good, eerie apocalyptic read!

Pestilence (The Four Horsemen, #1) by Laura Thalassa
Blurb:
They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.

When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.

Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.

Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.

And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

My Review:
As I mentioned above, I usually don't like apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic books but I've wanted to read this book since I first saw the gorgeous cover. I held off for the longest time simply because of the genre but when I saw it on Kindle Unlimited I figured there was no risk if I didn't like it.

But boy did I like it! Sara Burns is a total bada$$ and I was drawn to her character immediately. Pestilence took a while to warm up to as the plot initially reads like it's glorifying abusive relationships (he drags her behind his horse to punish her but then he's so sweet cleaning her up and he's so attractive...). But I did love watching Pestilence growing into his humanity and learning that not all humans were the enemy.

As far as the genre goes I thought it was really well written, in a way that didn't put me off or make me depressed reading it. Overall, this book is sexy, action-packed, and addictive enough to leave you eager for the next book.

Crew (Crew #1) by Tijan
Blurb:
To survive where I live, you have two options.

You can be a Normal--a cheerleader, jock, member of the debate team, or on the yearbook committee. You pretend everything is normal.

Or you can be crew.
You insult us? We hurt you.
You hurt us? We really hurt you.
And if you screw with us, we will end you.

My name is Bren.
I'm the only female in the Wolf Crew--the best, fiercest, and most dangerous crew there is--and we have a rule: There's no falling in love.

Well... too late.

*This book contains mature young adult situations.
*Full-length novel. First book in a series.
*Book ends at 95%. Two bonus chapters are at the end.

My Review:
Ugh. This book. I've read two books by this author before and loved them. I expected to love this one too. It's supposed to be the first book in a new series but when you read it it sounds more like you should read the Falcon Crest books first (which I haven't) and that this is a spinoff series. So I felt lost as I began reading it. I couldn't figure out this crew thing... the author claims its not a gang but you're beating people up and causing havoc.. what are you if not a gang??? I also really did not like Bren. She was a little too "gangsta" for my liking. I mean I've read books where the main character is involved with a gang or the mafia or whatever but this was not like that.

Overall, I couldn't get through this book. I got it on Kindle Unlimited so luckily I didn't pay money for it but I can't honestly recommend it.

Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles, #3.5) by Marissa Meyer
Blurb:
In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of them all?

Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told . . . until now.

Marissa Meyer spins yet another unforgettable tale about love and war, deceit and death. This extraordinary book includes full-color art and an excerpt from Winter, the next book in the Lunar Chronicles series.

My Review:
I admit it, I like reading books about the villain in a series. I haven't read the rest of the Lunar Chronicles yet but I was drawn to this book because of the cover and the blurb and found it easy to dive into.

I actually found myself loving Levana, and feeling sorry for the way her sister treated her. She was just a young girl with a crush on an unattainable guy. But then she starts acting crazy and a little whiny (the whining I didn't like so much).

I liked Levana's use of glamours to cover her true appearance and I loved the world-building in this book. I usually don't like the worlds described in this book, or the genre as a whole (it's hit or miss) but I really liked this story. It was only toward the middle that I felt it dragged a little so I skimmed a few pages here and there.

Overall, after reading this book I'm excited to go back and read the rest of the series.

Crimson Peak: The Official Movie Novelization by Nancy Holder
Blurb:
When her heart is stolen by a seductive stranger, a young woman is swept away to a house atop a mountain of blood-red clay: a place filled with secrets that will haunt her forever.

Between desire and darkness, between mystery and madness, lies the truth behind Crimson Peak. From acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro.

My Review:
Crimson Peak is my favorite movie and I've been wanting to read this book since I first saw it at Barnes and Noble eons ago. I finally snagged a copy on Black Friday and couldn't wait to dive in.

The movie novelization sticks true to the movie, but has the added benefit of giving the reader greater depth into the character's feelings and thoughts. Edith is the naive young woman who is swept away but the older, handsome baronet with a dark secret. Alan is hopelessly in love with Edith, yet she's never seen him that way. Even the house has observations and thoughts in the book.

Overall, if you're a fan of the movie, or even if you've never seen it, this is a great gothic-romance-horror-thriller that will keep you going until the final page.

Gemina (The Illuminae Files, #2) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Blurb:
Brace yourself for GEMINA—the highly anticipated sequel to the book critics called “out-of-this-world awesome”—featuring journal illustrations by bestselling author Marie Lu!

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.

Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy's most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station's wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They've totally got this. They hope.

Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

My Review:
Once again I cannot believe I didn't give this trilogy a chance sooner. The writing is addictive, the way the book itself is formatted and how the story is conveyed is cool and unique, and the reader is able to breeze through what should be a daunting 660+ pages in no time at all.

At first when I saw that Kady and Ezra would not be the main focal points of the second book in this trilogy I was a bit bummed but I loved Hanna and Nik right off the bat - and Ella! You gotta love that girl. Not to give anything away but Kady and Ezra - and AIDAN do make appearances in Gemina as well which satisfied me.

I'm really loving that Kady and Hanna are such bada$$, courageous female leads, well complimented by the awesome guys that love them who could not be more different themselves.

The only problem I have with this book, and remember folks - I borrowed the kindle edition through Overdrive, is the formatting in ebook edition. Some of the pages were tiny and I had to enlarge them, others were harder to read than if you had read the physical copy. I'm not really sure how the publisher could fix this issue, but it is something to check into in my opinion.

Overall, if you had asked me months ago I would have turned up my nose at this trilogy as something I "couldn't get into" but through my drive to "read something different" than my usual genres I fell in love with these amazing books and I cannot wait to see how it all ends in Obsidio. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, I highly recommend you give this series a try. It will pleasantly surprise you.

{Blog Tour} Book Review & Giveaway: UNDONE by Wendy Higgins

Undone (Unknown Trilogy #3) by Wendy Higgins
Blurb:
USA Today and New York Times bestselling author, Wendy Higgins, brings you the gripping, sensual conclusion to her apocalyptic trilogy.

Amber Tate never dreamed their heart-wrenching escape from the enemy’s attack would lead them to the most beautiful place she’s ever seen, marred by one ugly fact; it’s under enemy control. Like everywhere else in the world, Elmendorf military base in Alaska has been captured, and it’s time to take it back—all of it—one base, one city at a time. After losing so much, Amber clings to the only precious person she has left, and vows to sacrifice everything to help save the Earth.

Remy Haines is a lover, not a fighter, so when she finds herself in enemy territory, expected to feign allegiance while gathering intel for the rebel cause, she’s never been more out of her element. Tensions only increase when her feelings for Jacob “Tater” Tate won’t go away, and the enemy’s leader takes an interest in her. She’s torn between what her heart wants, and what she knows she should do. As for what her body needs…well, it’s always had a mind of its own.

My Review:
Amber, Tater, Rylen, and Remy and the gang are back for the final book in the Unknown Trilogy and I was so excited to see how this amazing trilogy would be wrapped up.

I was a little unsure going in how I would like alternating between Amber and Remy's perspectives because I wasn't as invested in Remy in the last book but I actually almost found myself liking Remy's side of the story even more than Amber's.

While Amber, Rylen, and the rest of the human/military personnel are back in Alaska planning how to take down the Baelese once and for all Remy, Tater, and Linette are living in enemy territory under the Baelese rule. At every turn you're wondering if the Baelese are going to find out that Remy, Tater, and Linette aren't actually "DRI" sympathizers and worrying about their fates if they break one of the Baelese's insane rules (especially the crazy  no-touching rule).

In Alaska, Amber, Rylen, and the others are prepping for war, trying to take back the military base, and communicating with other allies while trying to stay under the radar so they Baelese don't know what they're planning.

As tensions grow thicker and the two halves of the story converge it will be a heart-racing fight to take back Earth and I loved every single minute of it! I was addicted to the first book and really liked the second book but Undone completely blew me away! (P.S. I was completely right on who the leader of the Baelese was! I guessed it from book 1!)

Undone is sexy, action-packed, and will have you holding your breath with worried anticipation until the story's unbelievable climax. As a whole this trilogy perfectly took you on a journey. Book one gave you Amber's background and secret feelings for Rylen and the events leading up to the Baelese invasion and the dark first days/weeks that followed. Book two showed you the new "normal" and how humanity could react and turn on itself when what we should be doing is pulling together. And book three showed resilience and then recovery.

I liked that Undone was able to close out the trilogy without a mass of senseless casualties of major characters. Sometimes, especially on tv shows, you reach the final season (or in this case book) and a screenwriter (or author in this case) starts killing off major players so they don't have to have as many storylines going but thankfully Wendy Higgins kept most of the group alive which made me happy. There is one death toward the beginning of the book which is upsetting although I hardly remember that character from the previous books (they just didn't make much of an impression on me) and one toward the end that's shocking but all in all I like that she decided to keep most of the casualties to nameless background characters.

What surprised me most was how much I kind of liked the chemistry dancing between Remy and the leader of the Baelese. Even though I love Tater, reading those scenes were pretty awesome.

Overall, I was completely satisfied with this book from beginning to end and I recommend this trilogy to everyone because before I read the first book I would have told you I didn't like this genre, but I find that Wendy Higgins is such a phenomenal author that she could read any genre and I would love it!

Excerpt
This is an excerpt from Unrest (Unknown Trilogy #2) and happens to be one of my favorite scenes in that book.

I lay my head on his shoulder and barely registered the gentle bouncing of his steps up the stairs and down our hall. A minute later I felt him touch my butt, pulling my key from my back pocket. He kicked the door closed behind us and set me on the bed. I started to snuggle down, then shot to my feet, disoriented, as I remembered this bedtime was being forced upon me. I stumbled toward the wall. He caught me by the middle of my shirt, holding the material in his fist, and walked me backward until I was against the wall.

“Relax,” he said. “You’re all right.”

Our aloneness tightened around me like a bubble of hyperawareness.

“Ry,” I whispered. My hands went to his biceps, warm and solid. He closed his eyes and opened them again slowly.

“You’ve probably said enough for tonight,” he whispered back.

He was trying to shush me. I shook my head, and it was like slow motion, as if I my skull were rocking back and forth on a ship.

“I’ve lot mores to say.” I could hear the slur in my words, the ridiculousness of my lack of control, but I focused on Rylen’s pursed, full lips and a sensation of desire overrode the amusement.

He let go of my shirt and put his hands loosely on his hips. “You need to go to bed.”

“No.” I poked him in the hard chest and leaned forward too fast. I pressed both palms to his chest to balance myself. “God, Rylen” I said, feeling the contours of his pecs and watching my hands as I explored. It took a great deal of effort to lift my heavy head and look into his tired eyes. The comfort of that bluish gray tint was something I wanted to nestle down into. I rose up on my toes and moved my face close to his. So close, I could feel his breaths against my own lips.

“Pepper.” Rylen took both my hands from his chest and brought them back down to my sides, putting me firmly back on my feet.

“I love you,” I said softly.

“I love you, too.” His voice was that of a man trying to appease a child. “Now, let’s get you to bed.”

“Don’t,” I said too loudly. I pulled away from his grip and brought my hands up to his neck. This time when I looked at him I felt him soften under my touch. I rose up on my toes again, touching our noses, and he wrenched his face to the side.

“Pepper, seriously.”

“Please,” I begged.

He took my arms and brought them down again, this time holding my wrists at my sides. God, he made me so mad!

“You…” I searched my addled brain. “You’re a…”

“Don’t finish that sentence.”

“You’re a clit tease!” I shouted.

His eyebrows flew up and then he chuckled deeply. His mouth went to my ear as he pressed me into the wall and said, “I assure you, I’m not.” A shiver made me press my pelvis upward toward his. His own hips jolted backward at the touch and he hissed my name in warning. “Amber…”

“Kiss me,” I breathed.

He pulled back, and his face was guarded. “You’re drunker than I thought.”

I flung his hands from my wrists, feeling frustrated as the weight of years’ worth of emotions pressed down on me. I was sick and tired of not being taken seriously by this man.

About UNKNOWN (Unknown Trilogy #1):

When an unknown organization meticulously bombs major cities in the United States and across the globe, a trickle-down effect spreads to remaining towns at an alarming speed—everything from food and water sources to technology and communications are compromised.
