{Book Review} JACK by Penny Dee

Jack
Kings of Mayhem MC Tennessee Book 1
Penny Dee
MC Romance
Released May 28, 2021

Blurb:
What doesn't kill me had better start running...

Life as I knew it ended with a bullet.
It stole my brother from me and destroyed my family.
From the ashes, I rose stronger and meaner, to exact the kind of revenge best served bloody and cold.
I took out every single person I held responsible,
Except one.
He’s a phantom but his days are numbered.
Because I won’t stop until I’m done.

Then she shows up.
The forbidden fruit.
A light to my darkness.
I should resist her because what I touch, I destroy.
And my feisty wildflower deserves more.
More than this.
More than me.

But there is a monster lurking in the shadows.
A psychopath.
Watching her.
Watching us.
His threats torment her.
And they make my black heart burn.
But he should know,
You don’t ever mess with me, or the people I love.

JACK, is book one in the Kings of Mayhem MC Tennessee series.
For readers 18+

My Review:

I was really excited for this book after reading books in Penny Dee's Kings of Mayhem series and loving them. I don't know if it's just been a while since I read that series or if it was because I decided to read this book while rewatching Sons of Anarchy but this book just didn't do it for me for a few reasons.

So, Jack's little brother that he essentially raised is murdered and Jack gets really depressed and tries to push everyone away including his first wife and she just lets him? I thought biker wives or "Old Ladies" were supposed to be in it for the long haul and she just leaves him knowing that Jack is depressed and eventually marries someone else? Doesn't sound like any other MC type book I've read before but I suppose the author had to free up Jack to match him up with his new toddler... I mean love interest. You could have killed the wife off, really made Jack on the warpath.

Which brings me to my next point, Jack is killing people - scumbags granted - but like nobody cares that these people are just dropping dead? The cops aren't investigating? Not checking who had a grudge against these guys? It's just cool that Jack is murdering people? Alright I guess...

Then there is Jack and Bronte's relationship. Not only did they have little, if any, chemistry but trying to do the math on their age difference made me a little sick. Bronte was basically a toddler when Jack moved in next door who was already late teens/early twenties, MARRIED and a father of THREE KIDS. Bronte befriends Jack's brother who is around the age of Jack's three small children and Jack basically watches Bronte grow up and now the author wants readers to be okay with Jack hooking up with Bronte? It just didn't sit well with me. I mean I can handle age differences in books, but this is a pretty huge gap.

Overall, I really did not enjoy this book and once I figured that the author was pairing up Jack and Bronte I lost interest in finishing the book and mostly skimmed the ending.

{Release Week Blitz + Review} THE WICKED AFTERMATH by Melissa Foster

The Wicked Aftermath
The Wickeds: Dark Knights at Bayside #2
Melissa Foster
Contemporary Romance, MC Romance
268 Pages

Blurb:
THE WICKED AFTERMATH is an emotionally gripping story of love, loss, and hope, with a rich and entrancing happily ever after.

Set on the sandy shores of Cape Cod, the Wickeds feature fiercely protective heroes, strong heroines, and unbreakable family bonds. If you think bikers are all the same, you haven't met the Dark Knights. The Dark Knights are a motorcycle club, not a gang. Their members stick together like family and will stop at nothing to keep their communities safe. Some of the Wickeds’ love stories will be hilariously fun and deeply emotional, others will tear at your heartstrings and include injections of humor, but they will all leave you wishing you could climb between the pages and join them. All Wicked novels may be enjoyed as standalone romances.

When the person you blame for your grief is the only one who can save you from the pain...

Tank Wicked lost his sister and has since vowed to save everyone else in his path. He lives by the creed of the Dark Knights motorcycle club, sworn to protect and respect his community. He selflessly saves lives as a volunteer firefighter and treats the men and women who work for him at his tattoo shop like family. But life isn’t a balance scale where good deeds negate bad things to come, and one foggy night life guts Tank once again. When a car careens over the side of a bridge and into a river, Tank springs into action, plunging into the water to rescue the passengers. Four people go into the river, but only three come out alive.

Leah Yates is just trying to make it through each day. When the man she blames for her grief becomes the only one who can pull her from the depths of despair, she discovers that even hope comes at a price. Maybe this time she won't have to face it alone.

My Review:

Fair warning: prepare to fall in love with Leah and Tank. But have tissues on hand!

Tank has been intrigued by Leah since she first started working at his parents' restaurant. Is there something about him that makes the young waitress so uncomfortable she can't make eye contact with him and rushes away as soon as she's able?

Leah has a lot on her plate. She raised her younger brother, River, after their father died when she was 18 and he was only 13 and now has adopted and is raising River's two daughters. While Tank is undoubtedly attractive, she feels a smothering sense of grief around him that makes her unable to breathe, a sort of sixth sense she's had all of her life.

When tragedy strikes and Leah thinks her whole world will crumble down Tank, his family, and the Dark Knights step in in the most amazing way, bringing her into their fold and reminding her that she's part of their family now. But will the woman who's always had to step up and take care of others allow someone in to take care of her in her time of need? Or will her fear of letting anyone in drive her away from the man who's been so good to her and her family and makes her weak in the knees?

This book is an emotional roller-coaster. You feel Leah's grief and Tank's desire to make things - if not right maybe a new normal - again. I love his protectiveness and the way he is with June and Rosie. It's adorable. I also love how Tank and his family step in for Leah even though they don't know her that well. It makes you wish there were more people like that in the world. Leah and Tank have really great chemistry and I loved all of the secondary characters and can't wait to read the next books in this series.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It had all the elements that I love and once I started reading I couldn't wait to find out how things were going to turn out.

{Book Review} THE ALIEN'S FUTURE by Ella Maven

The Alien's Future
Drixonian Warrior, #0.5
by Ella Maven
Publisher: Self-Published
Release Date: February 1, 2020
Genre: Sci-Fi, Romance

Blurb:
Meet the Drixonian Warriors who are bred to fight, f*ck, and shake things up.

Space ship travel when you’ve been kidnapped sucks. I don’t get a pillow, there’s no snacks, and worst of all—the whole ship crashes. Except, it doesn’t crash on Earth, or even Mars. Nope, I’m in a whole new galaxy on a foreign planet and some body-builder-looking blue horned aliens with lots of piercings have decided I’m their new play thing. And not in a good way.

Until one alien decides he’s not going to share, and maybe I have a concussion from the crash, because I’m all about the possessive way he protects me. But there’s no way he’ll fight his whole clan for me… right?

Review:
I've seen books in genres like this before but this is the first one that made me want to check it out. I found out about this book during Virtually ApollyCon and got it free for signing up for the author's newsletter.

I wasn't expecting much going in... like I said it's a sub-genre I haven't explored too closely yet. But I ended up loving it. It was fun, sexy, sassy, and a quick, enjoyable read. It gives you just enough of a taste and set up for the books to come and leaves you wanting more.

I can't wait to read the full-length books in the series.

BLURB
I'm about to break the biggest rule of all.

RUGER
I was sixteen when she was born.
The niece of my best friend.
An angel with bright blue eyes and hair the color of night.
Through the years I’ve seen her grow from an adorable dimpled cupid into a strong, independent beauty.
Into a goddess.
A temptress.
Fate has brought us together.
But she is off limits.
I’ve got no business wanting her.
No business at all.

CHASTITY
For years I’ve crushed on him.
An older man who makes me tremble.
A biker King whose arms I want to get lost in.
Whose body I can only dream about touching.
Whose lips I’m dying to taste.
I shouldn’t want him.
But I do.
I shouldn’t lust after him.
But tell that to my poor hopeless heart.
I should stay away.
But I won’t.

Off Limits is book five in the Kings of Mayhem MC series. It can be read as a standalone.

My Review:
I usually don't go for MC romance. I never got into Sons of Anarchy or anything like that. But I was drawn to this one because of the forbidden romance trope.

This is a majorly sexy read. If you're looking for a sweet, clean romance this isn't right for you. But if you're like me and love tough, sexy, bad boy types I highly recommend this book.

I was hooked right off the start and if I hadn't had to get up early the next morning I would have read the whole thing in one sitting. Alas, I was up until 2 am and only had 40% to go. I loved Ruger and Chastity together, they had scorching hot chemistry.

Once finished, I wanted to go back and binge the first four books.

The only thing that kept me from giving this book a full 5 stars were the grammatical errors I saw throughout the book... but these might have been corrected between my reading of the ARC and the final book being published so don't let that stop you from checking this one out.

Overall, for story, plot, characterization, and heat factor I highly recommend this book! I can't wait to check out more by this author.

Exclusive Excerpt:
“You gonna sleep like that, doll? Or will you make some room for me?” Vamp asked.

I opened my uninjured eye to give him a look. I shouldn’t have looked at him. Now who’s satisfied and tickled too? I supposed both of us were, but the look on Vamp’s face was one part cat-who-got-its-cream and one part mesmerized.

The competitive part of me hated to think that he had won the war, but was it really worth fighting the war if I ended up with those delectable triple twitches every night by surrendering?

I felt the bed depress and my cocked leg was moved to drape over the back of Cary’s thigh. He moved my hands and pinned them by my head. At that maneuver, I opened both my eyes to find his intently examining me.

After a deep breath, he said in a low voice, “I want to marry you.”

I would not freak out. My eyes slid to the side and then back to him, “Um, did you drink from your dad’s highball glass tonight?”

He smirked and shook his head.

The niggle of fear I felt earlier was back except it had grown to a full-blown ache sliding through me. Mom and I were left by my dad when I was still a baby, and no man since had ever wanted to commit to my mother.

Maybe that’s why you go for cheaters. You kick them aside before they can love you and leave you.

What the fuck?

Now really, my thoughts needed to get with me and not try to undermine my sanity.

His mother deserted him, but he’s not scared of mentioning marriage.

True, but hell, we just got back together.

I took a deep breath and said, “I’m thinking it might be a little too soon, Cary. We just got back together.”

More of his weight descended on me. “I’m thinking it might be six years too damn late. We gotta make up for lost time.”

“Let’s take it one day at a time, and…” I trailed off because I was going to say he could make me his old lady before we tried marriage.

The problem was I wasn’t new to the MC world. I knew full well that being an old lady was a higher commitment than a marriage license and wedding bands would ever be. If I was willing to say, make me your old lady first, then any protests to marriage were useless.
