Writer Thursday: Q&A, Story Outline, and Vision Board - Monsters & Mist

Hey readers! This #WriterThursday I'm doing a little Q&A, sharing the process of developing Monsters & Mist and showing a bit more of the visuals inspired me while writing.
Q&A
Q: Is Monsters & Mist a retelling? A: No, originally it was meant to be but the story took off in a completely different, original direction.
Q: Will Monsters & Mist be a stand-alone or part of a series?A: At this time Monsters & Mist is a stand-alone, but I may revisit the world and the characters in the future.
Q: What was your favorite part of writing Monsters & Mist?A: Creating the mythology that the world of Monsters & Mist sprung from. I wanted a wholly original fantasy world so I didn’t want to base the mythology on any of our world mythology.
Q: What inspired Monsters & Mist?A: Orignally I wanted to do a retelling of a folktale I was read as a child, The Fog’s Net. It’s a story about a  creeping fog that devours boats and people and a weaver girl  tasked with making a new net for the fog in exchange for keeping her family safe. The fog goes back on it’s promise and takes her younger brother and she goes on a quest to bring him back. That was the bones of where I wanted to develop the story but it soon became clear that the villain of the story was not who I would have expected it to be.
Story Outlining / Development / Process
Monsters & Mist was written on this formation: 1 section divider on The History of Esternwhorl (the world in Monsters & Mist to every 2-3 chapters of story.
The History of Esternwhorl covers the origin of the world, the mythology, and the origins of any organization or religion mentioned within.
The first initial chapters follow Andromeda Mistsplitter the technical main character before fracturing off to the other main characters’ perspectives: Thane, Lyra, Daegan, Cygni, and Octavia.
In lieu of HoE sections, several chapters begin in 3rd person narrative of a newly introduced character to build a “meanwhile in...” omniscient feel to the story.

The view from the coast when you live in a world cloaked in thick mist.

The poorest people live on the coast of Vacantia so I pictured them living in shacks thrown together from driftwood thrown up on the coast.

My initial vision of what the Mistborn people would look like, perhaps a depiction of what the Vacantian people think the Mistborn look like.

While the world above is reminiscent of long ago times, the world below the sea is home to a highly tech advanced kingdom and a palace built on waterways like the city of Venice.

Mythological creatures are a thing in Esternwhorl. Below the surface of the sea a legion of creatures that are part sea serpent and part dragon called Krayverns are bred to be mounts for the queen’s warrior riders. The Starborn kingdom boasts an all female army of stormriders who ride giant phoenix-inspired beasts borne of lightning, cloud, and storms.

The fifth and most well hidden kingdom in Esternwhorl, the Starborn kingdom resides in the Sky any only those born with the map inside them can find their way.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT
Makram reacted to her touch by not reacting at all. His body remained tense, his eyes narrowed. Naime wondered if she’d offended him, and pulled her hand back, but he spun, catching her wrist.

He held her hand up between them. “I am accustomed to being left to my own devices. We will both need to adjust to this, yes? To being allies?”

Naime nodded. His thumb circled lightly against her palm. Some of the simple easiness of his presence in her space left. Expectant tension made her hyperaware of how their spaces interconnected, where their skin met, the roughness of his calloused thumb against skin that was tender and sensitive, how much distance there was between every part of her and every part of him. There was a pull she had not perceived before, as if the most natural thing in the world would be to step closer.

“There is one thing.” His voice took on the same purr it had earlier. Naime felt too vulnerable without the shield of irritation she had kept between them. Without something to focus on that took her mind from the fact he was attractive, that when given the opportunity, he was kind and playful.

“What?” Naime was appalled at the weakness of her own voice.

“When this is over, I would like to call you by name.”

“That doesn’t seem like a very good idea.”

“No, I don’t think it is.”

But she wanted that, to hear him say her name, like they were friends. She had so few. In his eyes, void and oblivion leached outward in inky tendrils from his pupils. There was so much she wanted to know about him. About his magic. About Sarkum.

“If you win, I will agree. But also…you will tell me everything I want to know about your magic.” She twisted her hand gently free of his grip and reached for his cheek, fascinated by the manifestation of his power. She stopped before she touched him, the spell broken by the suspicion that passed over his face.

“No, your name is in exchange for me winning. If you want to know about my magic, then you have to offer something of equal value.” He turned his face a fraction, as if he meant to move it against her outstretched fingers, but did not.

“I am trusting you with all my dreams for the future. You don’t think you can trust me with this?”

“Is your name worth that much?” he asked as she lowered her hand to her side.

“Only you can decide that.” She curled her hands in her caftan to prevent herself reaching for him again.

“Well, I will have plenty of time to consider it as I prepare for this. Which reminds me that I need something else.” He scooped a handful of almonds from a plate and shook them in his fist.

Naime raised her eyebrows in question. “It is yours, for your magic.”

He grinned, and tipped his head in agreement. “Rope.” He tossed a few of the almonds into his mouth. “And grappling hooks.”

Urban vs. Epic Fantasy Week Blogger Feature: Why I'm #TeamEpic

Entangled Teen's Urban vs. Epic Fantasy Week: The Final Day

Welcome back! All week other bloggers and I have been sharing posts for Entangled Teen's Urban vs. Epic Fantasy Week Battle. You've heard why their #TeamUrban Authors love Urban Fantasy and their #TeamEpic Authors love Epic Fantasy and now it's my turn. As I've mentioned I love them both, but if I really had to pick one I guess I'd say I'm...

Yes, yes I finally admit it... I'm #TeamEpic all the way!

Why I'm Team Epic (High) Fantasy:

* It's like stepping into a fairy tale. Or a medieval alternate universe where the female leads where these awesome dresses but are still fierce and can kick ass with a weapon.

* Our world doesn't exist or is greatly distorted from its' true self so that rules and history are rewritten or don't exist. In their place are rich worlds filled with magickal creatures.

* There's magick and mythical creatures and being different makes you important.

My Top 5 Favorite YA High Fantasy Novels:

1. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

2. The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins

3. Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill

4. The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

5. Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas

Top 5 Reasons I'm Loving Garden of Thorns by Amber Mitchell
1. Rayce is a sexy, frustratingly hot-and-cold love interest for Rose.

2. I love the idea of "The Garden" Burlesque Troupe. That's definitely not something I've seen in a fantasy novel before.

3. It kind of reminds me of a strange combination of Rebel of the Sands and Water for Elephants... but don't ask me why.

4. I think I've figured out Rose's secret but the little hints leading up to when the reader will (hopefully) find out is keeping me hooked.

5. I love the supporting characters: Oren, Arlo, and Marin.

You definitely should check it out! Garden of Thorns comes out Monday, March 6th, 2017!
