I Can't Wait For... MY CONTRARY MARY!

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released.

I loved the Janies books and I can't wait to read the first "Mary" book...

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 11 January 2021

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

Happy Monday Bookdragons! I hope you had a somewhat relaxing weekend.

What I Read Last Week:

Crier's War by Nina Varela

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I'm more looking forward to the second book to conclude the duology. I thought this one focused more on the rebellion and the sovereign and Crier's fiancé as opposed to the romance between Crier and Ayla. It was a little too slow burn (nearly non-existent) for me. And I want more of Storme and Junn... she seems ruthless but I'm intrigued.

Magic Dark and Strange by Kelly Powell
I was nervous going into this one because it has just so-so reviews online and I don't see it ever on bookstagram but I was hooked right from the beginning. I liked the narrator of the audiobook and the story was quick and kept me interested the whole way through. If you like historical fantasy that almost has a steampunk feel to it this one is a good choice.

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

I wasn't sure I was going to like this one when I first started listening to the audiobook but I ended up loving it as much as everyone said I would. It had vibes of Lord of the Flies (loosely) and The Handmaid's Tale and the narrator keeps you invested in the story. The ending is kind of sad but overall it's a great read for everyone looking for the type of YA book where girls knock down the patriarchy.

Currently Reading:

Witches of East End by Melissa de la Cruz

I have watched the Lifetime series 3 times but I have never actually read the book. I know that the two are vastly different in certain ways but I'm hoping I can separate one from the other once I start this tonight.

Next Read

The Last Witness by Claire McFall

This is the next audiobook I'm borrowing from my library's Hoopla. It's been on my TBR for a while and it sounds really eerie and awesome.

ARC Review: Soul in Darkness by Wendy Higgins

Soul in Darkness
By Wendy Higgins
Standalone
YA Mythology Retelling
February 12, 2019 by Wendy Higgins

Blurb:
People travel from afar to the small isle in the Aegean Sea hoping for a single glimpse of Princess Psyche. Their adoration for the mortal woman is so all-consuming that citizens begin to shower her with the very gifts and offerings they once left at the alter of Venus, goddess of love and beauty.

But gods are known for their jealousy.

Cupid, the god of love, takes pleasure in causing strife and mischief in the lives of humans. He uses love as a weapon, humoring in the weakness of people at the whims of their feelings. When his mother Venus approaches him about punishing the human girl who dares to steal her offerings and affections from the people, Cupid gladly accepts.

Psyche's punishment is to be given to a mysterious creature who only comes to her in the dark of night under the pact that she will never lay eyes on him. She is terrified of this stranger, who the oracle described as a serpent. Her mate, however, is masterful in his dealings with his bride. He takes his time, morphing her fears into different sensations completely.

Based on the Roman/Greek mythology of Cupid and Psyche by Lucius Apuleius, New York Times bestseller Wendy Higgins brings the tale to life, weaving layers that show exactly how a sacrificial lamb can be enchanted by an unseen monster.

Adult Historical Fantasy. Standalone.
My Review:
I feel conflicted about this one. I usually love this author's books, even going so far as to say I'd read and love anything she wrote. Then I read Soul in Darkness.

I'll start off by saying that even though I love mythology, I'm not familiar with the Cupid and Psyche myth. When I first heard about this book I was excited about the premise and I still think it's kind of a cool idea and I liked the setting, I just was not fond of Psyche. I found her really immature and annoying at times. In the beginning of the novel it gets old real quick that Psyche's thought wave is basically "everyone thinks I'm beautiful so I can get away with anything" and even though she claims to hate being treated that way she uses it to her advantage.

Despite this being by my favorite author I nearly DNF'd it a couple time, finally forcing myself to get to the halfway point before deciding to keep going or stop.

At times the story dragged and was a bit predictable but it does get better (more exciting) toward the end of the book which redeemed it enough for me to give it 3 stars.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 4 February 2019

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

What I Read Last Week What I Am Reading Now:
I'm only about 50 pages in (20 pages more than last week) at this rate I'll finish sometime 3 years from now...

I'm really enjoying this one, I started it late last week and at first I wasn't sure I would like it, but I really got into it. It reminds me a little of Six of Crows!

Up Next:
This comes out on the 14th. I'm going to alternate between War and Peace and Kingdom Cold once I finish The Gilded Wolves.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? - 24 December 2018

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

What I Read Last Week:

I did not get a whole lot of reading done last week due to work and prepping for the holidays, but I did read this chapter sampler for Enchantee and I really liked it.

What I Am Reading Now:

I'm about halfway through this because I set it down to start reading Romanov by Nadine Bandes and I wanted to finish it over the weekend, but hopefully by Wednesday.

When I saw this cover and the blurb it became a must read and luckily I got an eARC so Grave Mercy had to take a back seat. I regret nothing, I'm loving this one!

Up Next:

It's almost time for my yearly re-read of Texas Gothic! I reread this book every year around New Year's Eve. It's a favorite.

It's Monday! What are you reading? - December 17

#IMWAYR is a weekly meme started on J Kaye’s blog and then was hosted by Sheila from Book Journey. Sheila then passed it on to Kathryn at The Book Date.

What I Read Last Week:
I am loving the Illuminae Files and Gemina was as fantastic as Illuminae. I didn't think I would like Hanna and Nik as much as Kady and Ezra but I did! Can't wait to read Obsidio.

OMG! I finally finished it! I loved it, but my interest in audiobooks is waning. I used to listen on my walk home but now my walk is shorter so... yeah. Took me a month to get to.

I could not get into this one which was disappointing because I was so excited about this book. It reminded me of The Hazel Wood, which I didn't like either.

What I Am Reading Now:

Nuns that are assassins. Yeah, I'm just going to leave it at that. I started this over the weekend and am loving it!

Up Next:
Idk! Should I read this next or should I wait until closer to the release date?? This is one of those series enders that I'm dying to read yet I want to savor every minute of. We'll see how I feel after Grave Mercy.

Book Review: Secrets of Bennett Hall by Jordan Elizabeth

Secrets of Bennett Hall (Return to Amston #2) by Jordan Elizabeth
Blurb:
Darkness once twisted Adelaide Dinsmore’s mind, but she thought she had grown out of that. Her job as a teacher in Hedlund proved that – until she discovers one of her students dead and the town turns against her. As her mind starts to crumble, she is offered a new job, this time as a governess for Gentleman Bennett’s granddaughter back east.

Bennett Hall is a sprawling manor of winding tunnels and manicured lawns, and the fence is really just for show. The little girl, Theodora, is a delight, albeit quiet, and the Bennetts are kind enough, especially the dashing young Joseph. So what if one of the servants sends chills down her spine every time he looks at her? Surely that, and the noises in the night, are figments of her imagination. She won’t allow the past in Hedlund to tarnish her future at Bennett Hall.

Then, Theodora begins to speak of a Villain who haunts secret passages in the manor, and Adelaide stumbles upon a sealed off wing where ghosts whisper from the shadows. Twisted inventions fill the basement and the villagers are wary of the Bennett family.

The longer she stays at Bennett Hall, the less likely her chance for escape, but she cannot leave Theodora or Joseph. The darkness in her mind might be the only thing to save them.

My Review:
When Adelaide's first teaching job out west results in a dead student and the townspeople driving her out of town she's sure that she'll never get a job teaching again. When she returns home to the east she's surprised to find that the university that placed her at the school she was teaching at already has a new job lined up for her as a governess to a little girl on an isolated, sprawling estate.

Bennett Hall and its' occupants are not what Adelaide was expecting. While she takes to her new pupil, Theodora instantly Theodora's mother is ill and bedridden, her father is absent, and her grandfather seems to call all of the shots. Then there is Wille Green, a manservant who rubs Adelaide the wrong way.

After being told she's not allowed to leave the property without documentation, strange screams in the night, a run-in with Theodora's elderly great-aunts, and rumors of murders in the house Adelaide is determined to find out what's really going on in Bennett Hall and why the house brings forth memories of another life, a life before she was Adelaide Dinsmore. A life that's memories she's tried to squash to avoid being sent back to the asylum she spent time in as a child.

The only person who may be able to help Adelaide is Theodora's older cousin Joseph. But when uncovering the secrets of Bennett Hall takes an unexpected turn will Joseph believe her or think she's insane?

I've read quite a few of this author's other books but Secrets of Bennett Hall is on a whole other level than the rest. The writing shines and I couldn't get enough of the story.

Secrets of Bennett Hall reminded me of Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie because of the house and the little girl and The Revenant by Sonia Gensler because of Adelaide and the teacher/governess aspect which may contribute to why I loved this story so much. It really grabbed me from the beginning and just when I was sure I had unraveled the mystery the author threw in a plot twist I never would have guessed.

Overall, this is definitely my new favorite book by this author. I know she prefers to write her steampunk things, but I'd much prefer reading more books like this.

Today I'm excited to share with you the release of my YA Historical Fantasy Fairytale Retelling, CurseBreaker! CurseBreaker is my seventh published novel! I hope you're as excited to read it as I am to have it out in the world!

Title: CurseBreaker
Genre: YA Historical Fantasy Fairytale Retelling
Author: Taylor Fenner
Publisher: Taylor C. Fenner Publishing
Release Date: January 2, 2018

Blurb:
A Scorned Queen, A Cursed Prince, A Girl begging for love and adventure...

History Channel's Vikings meets Norse Folklore and Mythology in this High Fantasy retelling of the Norwegian Fairy Tale, East O' The Sun and West O' The Moon.

Eighteen-year-old Helga "Hel" Daalgaard has accepted that the only love and adventure in her future live within the pages of the books her father brings for her from his travels. She's content helping around the home she shares with her parents and eight siblings; it may be a dull life but it's all she's ever known... until a polar bear arrives at their tiny cottage and offers up a strange proposal.

After spurning his young stepmother's advances, Prince Dyre is cursed to spend his days in the body of a polar bear. To break the curse he must find a woman to fall in love with him and stay with him for a year - but the woman of his choosing can never learn that he is truly a man or Dyre will be forced into a future even worse than spending his days as a polar bear. He thinks Hel could be the one to break the curse, but if Hel ever finds out what brought them together he may lose her forever.

Nobody ever crossed Viveka, Queen of Aldavellir, and lived to tell about it. Dyre is the only man alive that has turned her down but she'll have him whether he likes it or not. She'll make it impossible for the girl he's chosen to last long enough to break the curse. After all, queens don't have to play fair.

Excerpt
“Shhh,” the polar bear hushes me as he listens to something in the distance. His ears perk up and a menacing growl passes his pursed lips. I scan the forest for signs of a disturbance and my eyes play tricks on me as I glimpse figures of shadow and mist peeking around the trunks of trees. “Hel, I need you to listen to me very carefully,” the urgency in the polar bear’s voice gets my attention. “I want you to run in the direction we came from and hide among the trees. Whatever you hear do not come out until I come find you. Can you do that?”

“I can help you,” I suggest as my eyes scan the forest again. The shadow figures are creeping closer.

“No!” the polar bear snarls. Softening his voice he adds, “Please Hel, just do as I say.”

Reluctantly I slip from his back and run away, my cloak whipping wildly in my wake. I hear the polar bear’s powerful growl echoing through the forest as I run as fast as I can. I mentally curse the dress I’m wearing as it wraps around my legs. Behind me, I can hear the sounds of growls and inhuman whines followed by the sickening sound of flesh being ripped from bone. My braided hair slaps against my back and loose strands blur my vision as I swear I see more shadowy mist figures popping up in the direction I’m heading. I skid to a halt and change course but I can see something rushing toward me in my peripheral vision.

Something bites my elbow and I shriek in pain as I cradle my wounded arm against my chest and try to outrun my invisible assailant.

Don’t look back, don’t look back, don’t look back, I chant over and over in my head as I feel invisible hands tugging and ripping at my cloak. I spin around to fend off the grabbing hands with my pack and come face to face with my assailant at the moment it loses its invisibility. A scream reverberates through the forest and it takes me a minute to realize it is coming from me.

I back up quickly as the eyes of the monstrous creature narrow and zero in on me. Bigger and stronger than me the creature standing before me is completely naked and covered in thick black hair on nearly every inch of its’ body. Its’ nose is large and bulbous and crazed unfocused eyes catch my every movement. A trickle of blood oozes out of the corner of its’ mouth from my elbow wound as it stalks forward hunting me. Long claw-like fingernails swing in my direction as I back into a tree trunk and throw my arms up in front of my face in a lame attempt to protect myself. I can feel the hard bark of the tree scraping my back through my dress, a small pain compared to what the troll is about to do to my face and body.

Just as the troll is about to lunge at me the polar bear pounces on it and rips its throat out in one swipe. Excess blood splashes on my face and dress as the troll drops lifelessly to the ground.

How Vikings Inspired My Writing Process:
I always knew I wanted to do a retelling of East O' The Sun and West O' The Moon. It was my favorite fairytale as a child and as I flipped through it at an older age, reading through the story I could see the images of the story expanding unfolding in my mind. At the time I just didn't know the hows or whys of how I would retell EOTSAWOTM.

Then a year and a half ago I spent the summer binge-watching Vikings on Netflix. I was hooked. I loved the culture and the time period but the thing I think that stood out the most was how strong the women of that time period were, the freedoms they had. It seemed like in other parts of the world in that era - such as England and France - women were still considered beneath men. They didn't have positions of power or the liberties that the Viking women seemed to. So with those women in mind CurseBreaker began writing itself in my mind.

Why couldn't a woman travel the world to rescue the man she loved from the evil queen? What if the man she loved had been a warrior, who hungered for the feel of the ocean wind on his skin as he paced his empty palace waiting for a curse to be broken? What if a queen put a curse on her stepson not because he was in the way of her ruling, but because he injured her vanity?

Researching this story was fun and I learned a lot about Viking customs during the process. Tomorrow you'll see inside my pinboard to the pictures that helped in the writing of this book, but here are a few Viking Fun Facts you might not have known:

- Vikings used to give kittens to new brides to honor Freya, the Norse goddess of love, sexuality, beauty, and fertility.

- Vikings didn't have buttons. Instead they used brooches, belts, and laces to keep their clothing fastened.

- Vikings mainly drank water, milk, and ale although the wealthier Vikings did have access to wine.

- During weddings, rings were traditionally presented on a sword's blade.

Man Crush Monday: Book Boyfriend Edition #4

This MCM I've chosen one of my favorite book boyfriends who is appearing in an upcoming sequel I highly recommend...

Man Crush Monday: Book Boyfriend Edition #4
The Goblin King / Der Erlkonig / Mein Herr
Credit: S. Jae-Jones

Books The Goblin King / Der Erlkonig / Main Herr Appears In:
- Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
- Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones

Why I'm Crushing:
The Goblin King is everything I love: broken yet sarcastic, mischievous, and oh-so-sexy. I loved him in Wintersong but I loved him even more in Shadowsong where we get a glimpse into his bleak beginnings and how he became The Goblin King. I love how he loved Liesl so much he was willing to pay the consequences just so she could live and while others have compared Wintersong to Labyrinth (which I have never seen and don't plan to) I saw The Goblin King more as Hades and Liesl as Persephone in a way. If you loved The Goblin King in Wintersong you're going to adore him in Shadowsong!

Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones hits bookshelves February 6, 2018!
